T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Josnrn Ionian, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sagamore, in the county of Armstrong and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screen Doors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to screen doors and has for its object the provision of a screen door structure including swinging screen doors proper permanently hinged within a frame adapted to be applied bodily to a doorway, the advantage being that the screen doors proper and their supporting frame are a complete and separate entity which may be manufactured and sold as such. for ready application to a doorway and which may be secured in position merely by a plurality of nails or screws which hold the frame upon the door frame. it being thus unnecessary for the user to have to cut, lit and hang the doors as" is necessary in the use of the ordinary well known screen door.
An important object is the provision of a device of this character in which the pen manent frame of the screen doors proper is capable of being folded so that when the use of the structure is not desired and it is removed from the doorway it may be folded for storage in a small space or for convenience in transportation.
A further object is the provision of a structure of this character which includes two screen doors proper which have con;-
nectin means whereby they will both be opened when one is pushed against or pulled upon.
An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, highly efficient in use, durable in service and a general improvement in the art.
lVith the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation of my in applied position;
Figure 2 is a cross sectional view there through on theline 22 of Figure 1 showing'it in applied position; and
Figure 3 is a plan view.
device Referring more particularly to the drawings, the letter A designates the usual frame of a doorway in building. Ordinarily screen doors are applied to such a frame in properly hanging the door and they have i the additional disadvantage of seriously marring the woodwork so as to leave it more or less unsightly after the screen door is taken down.
In carrying out the present invention.
which eliminates the above mentioned diss advantages, 1 make use of a frame includingupright sides 10 to the upper ends of which is suitably secured across member 11 which is formed in sections hingedly connected,-
as indicated at 12. Disposed within the opening in the frame is, a pair of screen doors proper, indicated at 13, and formed of suitable frames covered with wire screen in the usual manner, these doors being hinged upon theuprights 10, as shown. at 1 1, and it will be apparent that these hinges may be of the type which will permit thedoors 13 to swing in only one direction or in both directions, this detail not forming an essential part of the invention.
Connected with the upper outer corners of thedoors 13 are thehorizontal arms 15 ofrods 16 which are journaled insuitable bearings 17 and which are formed between said bearings withcrank portions 18. Pivoted transversely at the center of thecross member 11 is arocker arm 19 with the ends of which are pivotally connectedlinks 20 which are in turn pivotally connected with thecrank portions 18. It is also preferable to provide acoil spring 21 connected with one of the crank portions and with a stud or the like projecting from thecross'menr ber 11 for the purpose of normally holding thedoors 13 in closed position.
When the door is manufactured and assembled it is intended that it may be shipped in folded position, that is with thecross bar 11 folded back upon itself on thehinges 12 and with thedoors 13 arranged one upon the other. This folding is not illustrated by hinging them directly upon one side and in the drawings as it is so obvious how it is effected. In applying the door it is of course necessary that it he unfolded so that the cross bar It]. will have both sections arranged in the same plane with thedoors 13 likewise arranged in thesame plane. The frame is then placed in position. against the frame A ol' the doorway and secured by means of securingmeinhers 22 which pass through the upr ghts it) and into the sides of the door :tran'ie It, these securinp members being preferably screws and the holes therefor lieing initiall provided in theuprights 10 so as to relieve the user 01? the necessity of ascertaining the exact points where the securing members should he placei'il. When the door is thus applied and the linl-z and rocker arm connection assemhled it will be apparent that whenl c door 13 is pushed or pulled o 'ien it in i resnit in rotation oil theassotiated rod 16 and fillllli portion '18 and owing to the con cction ot the two crank portions with the central rocker arm 11.9 it willheapparcnttiiat the other door will be Cori-espondingl v swung. In this way simultaneous opening and -closiug of both doors is effected. tioned, thespring 21 always operates to "esist opening movement and serves to enact closing after tire doors have been opened. When the use of the structure is no long desired it is apparent that thesecuring menihers 22 may be readily moved wh uipou' the frame and the doors mounted therein nray he removed, bodily and the only detacing of the door frame A will he the holes left when thescrews 22 are removed.
From the foregoing description and a study oi"? the drawings it will he apparent that I have thus provided a verv simply As above men-- constructed and consequently inexpensive screen door structure which may be applied and secured in position by even a most unskilled person in a ver; Few minutes time and without the en'1plo ,'ment of any tools other than a screw driver. Owing to this particular arrangement it is apparent that the doors being-5 1 eri'uaucntly associated with the frame will always hang properly and will present a ver neat and attractive appearance.
l 'hile l have shown and described the prr mired embodiment of the invention it isot course to he readily understood that l res the irght to make such changes iornn construction and arrangement or ua ts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the suboi ed claim.
ring thus described my invention, 1
clain'i:
A door structure of the character described comprising a permanent frame at tptcd to be secured upon the door frame o l a huildi a. pair of doors proper hinged within said frame, rods mounted at the upper outer corners of the doors-proper and inchiding horizontal portions secured thereto and vertical port-ions jouri'laled upon the Frame, said vertical port-ions being formed with cranks a rocker arm pivoted centrally upon the top of the frame, and links pivotally connected with the rocker arm and with said cranks.
In testimony whereof I hereunto atiix my signature.
