To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM JOHN Ron- INSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harrisburg, in the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supports and Methods of Making Same; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to supports and methods of making the same and has for an object to provide a new and improved support of unitary structure for supporting pipes, cables, electric conductors, and the like.

A further object of the invention is to provide a support composed of a section of pipe or tube flattened with certain portions of the side margins cut away, producing tongues at opposite ends of a united intermediate portion which said tongues are bent outwardly to form at one side a base and at the other side supporting engaging prongs.

With these and other objects in view the invention comprises certain novel elements, units, constructions and steps as disclosed in the drawing, together with mechanical and functional equivalents thereof, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Figure 1 shows in perspective the completed device;

Figure 2 shows the completed device in side elevation;

Figure 8 is a top plan view of the completed device;

Figure 4- is a perspective view of a section of pipe or tubing from which the device is constructed, and before being flattened;

Figure 5 is a view of the pipe or tube flattened, being the step succeeding the severing of the sections, as shown at Figure 1, and

Figure 6 is a perspective view of the flattened pipe with certain parts of the marginal edges removed previous to bending out the tongues upon opposite sides of the intermediate connected portion.

Like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.

The manufacture of the support, which as an article is shown in the present application, is carried out by employing a section ofpipe 10, as shown at Figure 1, being flattened into the structure shown at 11 at Figure 5. As found in that figure the marginal edges of the plane sheets are united throughout the length but the edges are removed in any approved manner, as by grinding, cutting, or other milling or machining, as shown in Figure 6, producing central unitedmarginal sections 12 with the plates upon opposite sides of this united section ununited, except at this united portion. Preferably also at this stage the superposed members are perforated by a punch, indicated at 13, which extends through both of the plates so that when this end of the device-is separated, as shown at Figures 1, 2 and 3 by forming curves orbends 14;, the members stand substantially in the same plane with'theperforations 13 adjacent the ends thereof. This plane surface may be perpendicular to the central united portion, as shown at Figure 2 in full lines or at an angle thereto, as shown in dotted lines in that figure, this being wholly immaterial to the invention and dependent upon the position in which the device is used. If this support is used upon a horizontal or a perpendicular surface, theextremities 15 will be perpendicular to thecentral portion 16. If it is to be used upon an inclined surface, as upon a roof, the members will take theposition 15.

Upon the opposite sides of thecentral portion 16 the lips 17 will be bent outwardly and curved, as indicated at 18, preferably with theextremities 19 again bent outwardly to facilitate the placing of the cable or pipe in position. In any case the entire structure is integral and is united upon both sides of the central supportingportion 16,whereby the whole device is made more rigid and stationary in its supporting function.

The device may be used in any manner where such a device may be found desirable for supporting a pipe, cable, conductor or the like which is enclosed between and grasped by thelips 18.
