Speccation of Letters Patent No, 14,219, dated February 12, 1856.

Be it known that I, J oHN ALLENDER, of New London, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scissors, Shears, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the same are described and represented in the Jfollowing specification and drawings.

To enable others skilled in the art, to make and use my improvements, I will proceed to describe their construction, use, and operation, referringto-the drawings, in which the same letters indicate like parts in each of the figures.

Figure 1 is a plan of a pair of scissors with my improvements. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan with a fulcrum of a dierent construction. Fig. 4 is an elevation of the fulcrum represented in Figs. 1, and, 2.

The nature of my invention and improvements in common scissors and shears consists in making or providing arms to the fulcrum, to vibrate with, and act upon each blade at some distance from the fulcrum, to hold and keep the cutting edges of the blades in contact with each other.

In the above mentioned drawing A, is one blade of a pair of shears, and, B, the other: both of which are provided with a bow A and B, for the thumb and fore finger to operate them. These blades and bows may be made in some one of the common forms in use, or of such other form as may be described. The ulcrum bolt C of these shears, is made in the form represented in Fig. 4, with an arm D extending from the head and provided with a set screw E, to screw against the blade A, as represented in Fig. 2, the point of the screw E entering a small cavity in the blade, so as to keep the arm D always in a proper position for the screw E to press the edge of A, against B, which pressure may be adjust-ed as desired by turning the screw E.

The bolt C after passing through the shears, passes through the hub F of the arm Gr, as represented, which arm is also provided with a set screw H, to screw into a cavity provided for it in the blade B, so as to hold the arm G in a proper position on the blade B, for the screw H to press the blade B against the blade A, which pressure may be adjusted so as to adapt the shears to the material being cut, by turning the screw H.

As the arm G has to turn on the bolt C, as the blade B is vibrated, there should be two nuts I, I applied to the bolt so that when the nut I is screwed to a proper position against the hub F, the nut I may be screwed against it (the nut I) to prevent it from being turned to by the friction of the hub F, against it.

I contemplate that my improvements may be applied to the various kinds of scissors and shears now in use for the numerous pury poses to which they are applied.

I believe I have described the construction, operation and use of my improvements in scissors, shears, etc., so as to enable any person skilled in the art to make and use them. I will now specify what I desire to secure by Letters Patent, to wit:

lVhat I claim as my invention and improvement in common scissors and shears 1s- Making or providing arms to t-he ulcrum to vibrate with, and act upon each blade some distance from the fulcrum to hold and keep their cutting edges in contact with each other substantially as described.
