To aZZcu/wmz't may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL 0. Ramos, a
. citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, county of Milwaukee, ahd'State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Valve-Settmg Devlces, of
which the following isa description, reference being had to'the-ac'companying drawings, which are a part of this specification. The inventlon relates to a'devlce for ad justing the lengtlrof'the valve rod for a valve of an internalcombustion engine, and more particularly to valve rods used with overhead valve arrangements wherein the adjustment vof the valve is madebetween the valve rodand the overhead-tappet lever.
It is now common practice to' employ roundrods for valve 'rods'which are used in operating the valves of internal combustion engines, and in orderto adjust thelength' of this rod so that the valve will be properly actuated itis necessary to hold two parts of the rod in adjusted position while they are being tightened together, and to do, this requires the services of two men, one to hold the rod and the adjustable head while the other tightens up on the locking device. To overcome this difficulty, I have provided a device in which the operator may successfully hold the round valve rod and the adjustable head in adjusted position with one hand whilehe secures them in position by. screwing up a locking-nut with the other hand.
The invention further consists in the several features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.
The drawing shows a perspective view of a device embodying the invention.
In the drawing the numeral 1 designates a round valve rod, 2 the adjustable spherically curved head mounted on the upper portion of the threaded end 3 of the rod 1 and provided with a wrench-engaging face a, and 5 is the lock-nut mounted on the threaded portion 3 of the rod 1 and adapted to be screwed up against the head 2 and to lock said head and said rod in adjusted position. As is well known, the rounded or spherical upper end of the head 2 engages in a similarly curved recess 1n the lever which acts upon the valve. All of this is of well-known construction and the tool hereinafter described is designed to permit of the adjustment'of these Specification of Letters Patent. I Patgnted Jan. 3 1922 1920. parts by a single operator;
The device consists of a wrench 6 for engaging the wrench face 4: of the head 2, and a gripping tool. 7 for the round rod 1, such as a pair of pliers having jaws 8 and handles 9, the members of the pliers being pivotally secured together by apivot bolt 10, and a'connection between the wrench 6 and the tool 7 so that the device may be readily'held in one hand by the operator, the pliers holding the rod 1 and the wrench head 2' in fixed position so that a third wrench in the other hand of the operator may be applied to the nut 5. One of the members of the pliers has a threaded opening, 11' receiving-ascrew 12.
A slotted link 13, having one end journaled in the head 14: of thescrew 12, is adjustably secured to the wrench by a screw 15 carried-by the wrench 6 and passing through the slot in said link and provided with a clamping nut 16 to hold the link and wrench together when the wrench has been brought into engagement with the nut portion 4: of the head 2.
The pliers may be moved up and down upon thescrew 12 so as to space the pliers from the wrench 6 at any desired distance to accommodate the position of these members with respect to the parts to be engaged by them; and when adjusted the pliers are locked in spaced relation to the wrench 6 by means of a nut, such as awing nut 17 The wrench 6 is shown as a double-ended wrench in which the wrench portions are of different sizes for accommodating difierent sized valve parts, and the screw 15 has a squared portion which fits the squared openings 18 near the ends of the wrench.
In the use of the device, the spaced adjustment of the wrench 6 and the gripping tool 7 is first effected so as to bring the jaws of the gripping tool in the plane of the rod below the nut 5 and the wrench in the plane of the nut portion 1 of the head 2. The wrench 6 is at that time loosely connected to the link 13 so that it may be moved along the operator holds the device by gripping the pliers about the rod the wrench 6 engages the nut portion 4 of the head 2so that both the rod and the head areheldin adjusted position by one hand while with the other hand the operator takes another wrenchand turns the nut 5 into locking engage ment. with the head 2.
I desire it to be understood thatthe invention is not limited to any specific form orarrangement of parts exceptin so-far a such limitations are specified in the claims,
l/Vhat Iclaimas my invention is:
1. The combination of a wrench, a round valve-rod engaging tool, and a connection between said wrench and tool tohold-them in parallel spaced relation.
2. The. combination of a wrenclna roundvalve-rodengaging tool, and, an adjustable,
connectionbetween saidrwrench and tool to hold them in parallelspaced relation.
In a device. of the character described,
the combination of awrench, a pair of pliers, and. means securing the wrench in spaced parallel relationto the pliers.
at. Thecombination of a wrench, apa-ir of pliers, a connection between thepliers and the wrench to hold them in spaced. parallel relation with respect to each other, and permit, an angular adjustment of thewrench,
5. The combinationof a wrench, atpair. of
pliers, a. slottedlink operatively secured at= move bodily relatively to each other, one.
end of. said linkage having a spaced connection, withone of thehandles to dispose thewreneh and; thetool in. parallelplanes.
8. The combinationofia wrench, a round valve: rod engaging. tool, and linkageconnecting thehandles Ofsaid Wrench and tool together permitting them to swing; and move bodilyrelatively toeach other, one end of. saidlinkage having; an. adjustable spacedconnection with one of saidQhandlesto dispose. said-wrenchand toohin parallel planes.
