Description

A. B. JOHNSON. FORCEPS. APPHCATION FILED AP R.12, 1921.
1 395 714 I Patented Nov. 1, 1921.
.srarss ALBERT BAXTER JOHNSON, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT.
. FORCEPS.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT BAXTER J OHN- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county'of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Forceps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvementsin forceps and particularly to forceps for use in removing the lower wisdom teeth or third molars, and the object of my improvement is to produce in a single implement of peculiar form one that is serviceable for removing a wisdom tooth designated partic ularly as the lower wisdom tooth directly and without the preliminary operation of cutting away of the adjacent portions of the jaw bone and, furthermore, in cases where the next or second molar is still in place; conditions which commonly require the services of a specialist; whereas, by the use of forceps involving my invention the ordinary practitioner will be enabled to effect such removal, and in a satisfactory and efficient manner.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pair of forceps made in accordance with my inventionand positioned approximately in the proper position for use.
Fig. .2 is an elevation of the same as viewed from the front end, the handles being broken away.
Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of thesame.
Fig. .4 is a plan view of the same.
-Fig. 5 is a side elevation on an enlarged scale of. the bit portion of one ofthe members, as viewed from the inner side.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary side view of a jaw, showing rear molar, which is the one to be removed, and also the molar next in front, and also showing the bit structure of the forceps in the operative position.
My improved forceps comprise a pair ofmating members 10 that are crossed in the usual manner, having opposed fiat bearing faces 11 on overlapping portions that are pivotally connected by a pivotal pin orscrew 12, having each at one side of the said bearing faces ahandle 13, and having at the other side thereof a bit.structure 14.
Also, as usual, thehandles 13 are generally upwardly directed or inclined relatively to the bearing faces 11 and the bit Specification of Letters Patent.
Consideringthe details of the said bit structures, these comprise two parts, positioned one generally in front of the other, each of which has a function to perform in use, and the two operating substantially simultaneously.
One of these parts corresponds to forceps and the other to the instrument known in the art as an elevator, the forceps being in front and adapted to engage with the tooth to be extracted, and the other being adapted to be entered between the tooth to be extracted and the next or second molar.
Thus at the front end of eachmember 10 is a bit orjaw 15 that is adapted to engage with the tooth and for this purpose isprovided with a suitable cavity orrecess 16 of the usual form for inclosing the tooth andobtaining a suitable hold thereon.
The elevator bit orjaw 17 is separated from theforceps jaw 15 by aspace 18 that serves to position theforceps jaw 15 at a Patented Nov. 1, H121.
' Application filed April 12, 1921. Serial No. 460,624.
elges 19 opposed one to the other and they may have the tip ends 20 in the form of a sharp point, it being understood that special attention will be given to provide a form of'j aw that is adapted for the purpose specified.
In use, in closing the jaws the elevator jaws first enter between the teeth and as pressure is applied the wisdom tooth is forced rearwardly, this effect being continued until the forceps jaws engage with the wisdom tooth. For the final action a movement of the tooth in the opposite direction is necessary, and in this movement the elevator jaws will ride on the adjacent tooth and thus will serve as a fulcrum for the forceps during such final action.
The combination of movements described are thus readily effected by the use of the instrument described, wherefore, by the use of the said instrument a task that is usually difficult is rendered relatively easily performed. I claim as my invention Forceps constructed and arranged for use in extracting lower Wisdom teeth comprising a pair of pivotally connected members having handles at one end and jaw structures at the other end, the saidjaw structures 10 having tWo individual jaws for each of the said jaw structures for cooperating with the twoindividual jaws of the other of the said jaw structures, and the said individual jaws comprising forcep jaws at the front portionof the jaw structures forengaging 15 With the body of the tooth to be extracted, and elevator jaws of generally wedge-shaped form of cross-section for being entered between the said tooth and the next tooth.
ALBERT BAXTER JOHNSON.
