To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. Bo-

GARDUS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicopee, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Service-Tags, of which the following is a specification.-

My invention relates to tags and more particularly to a service tag.

Tn automobile service stations where tires are turned in by the customers to be repaired, confusion of goods is frequently caused, or avoided only with great difliculty, because of the fact that the article delivered by the customer frequently consists, in fact, of several articles-the tire casing, the tube, and the rim. Prior to beginning work on the element, or elements, of this group, on which repairs are to be made, the elements are, of course, separated. And when the job is finished, it is only with great difliculty that the elements are identified as forming parts of the single group or article and as property of the particular customer. Also, it is a very considerable task to properly keep track of the material and 1abor charge.

I have devised a service tag which pro.- vides for the convenient identification of the elements of a group, for the convenient keeping track of the material and labor charge, and for the convenient identification of the group with the customer.

The principal object of my invention is to provide a. service tag for use in identifying the elements of a group while the elements are separated, for use in identifying the group and its elements with the claimant of the group, for use in keeping data relative to the claimant and order, and for use in keeping track of certain data relative to the group or any of its elements, such as the material and labor costs of repairing certain elements of the group.

To this end and also to improve generally upon devices of the character indicated, my invention consists in the following matters hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a face or front view of a service tag embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a rear or back view of the same. Referring now to the drawings:

The illustrated tag is conveniently made of heavy Manila paper and comprises a unitary whole divided by transverse lines of perforations a, b, 0, (Z, into fiveseparable portions 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, portions 1, 3, and i being apertured for the reception of attaching means, as strings (not shown). Each of the portions bears the same identification character, as thenumber E 45153, on its face.

Theportion 2, or body, carries upon its face certain captions and blanks for entries, such as, as illustrated: data relative to the customer or claimant, as his name and address; data relative to the order, as date, circumstances of receiving and delivery, identi fication of article and instructions, and, at the left and right respectively, data such as, when the goods Will be called for, etc., and invoice number, price, etc. Upon its rear side theportion 2 carries, as illustrated, captions, conveniently printed thereon, for the entry of cost data, 2'. c. labor and material entries :-on the top line, the kind of cementCement-that might be used, as pure ParaP. P. and vulcanizing cement- Vulc.-; on the second, third, and fourth lines, at the left, the grades of raw rubber that might be used204:, 305, 306-; on these same lines, in the center, the caption for gageGa.-indicating the point for the workman to fill in the thickness or gage of the raw rubber used; on the fifth and sixth lines, the grades-309 and 349-015 the heavy fabric-Hvy fabricthat might be used; and. on the seventh line, the caption indicating the point of entry for other materials used-Other material. At the extreme right are the captions and blanksLbs.- andOz.-- for the entry of'the weights of the various materials used. Next below are the captions and blanks for entry of the workmens names and times, and, finally, is the caption and blank for-Data on replacements.

The portions 3 and 4, bear, as illustrated,

nothing on their faces except their identification number while the backs of these portions are left blank, as for cost entrles. The portion 5, or claimants check, 1n addition to the identification number, conveniently bears, as illustrated, the dlrectlons to the customer as No' goods delivered without this claim check.

Conveniently, and as illustrated, the portions 1, 3, 4, and 5 are made smaller than thebody 2 as it has been found in practice that there is no necessity for making them as 4 large as thebody 2.

The ortion 1, with thebody portion 2 attached, is for attachment to the part'to be repaired or, if more than one part is to be repaired, for attachment to that part, the work upon which will necessltate the entry of the greater amount of cost data. Thebody portion 2 is designed to be a file record, eventually detached from the portion 1 for filing. Portions 3 and 4 are identification ta for the parts not to be repaired or for t ose arts, the work upon which will necessitate t e lesser amount of cost data, as compared to the part to which thebody portion 2 is attached. The portion 5, as noted above, is the claimants check.

In use :-suppose that a customer brings to a service station a casing, tube and rim, all forming, so far as the customer is concerned, a single article. The casing is to receive repairs calling for the entry of a large amount of cost data, the tube is to receive, say, merely a patch calling for the entry of but a small amount of cost data, and the rim is to have nothing done upon it. The service station employee, or bailee, tears oil the portion 5 or claim check, and gives it to the customer, bailor, or claimant. The employee then attaches the portion 1, with theportion 2 still attached thereto, to the casing, as that is the element whose repair will mean the entry of a large amount of cost data, and on the face of theportion 2 fills in the identification data, the articles received, etc. He tears oft the portion 3 and attaches it to the tube and he tears off the portion 4; and attaches it to the rim. The rim, with the portion 4 attached, is sent to storage. The casing with theportions 1 and 2 attached is sent to the shops where theportion 2 is torn ofi', the materials used for the casing noted on its back, as by checking Cement and P. P. and 204; filling in, before Ga. and on the line with 204, the gage of the raw rubber ofgrade 204 that was used; checking 309. Hvy fabric; noting what other material was used; filling in, under Lbs and Oz, opposite the material captions the respective weights of the materials used; and making the labor entries by filling in the name of the workman and his time. Thus, theportion 2, now carries, in addition to the information on its face, the -materials and labor cost data of the repairs made on the casing. The portion 1 remains attached to the casing. I

When the repairs are completed, the cas; ing, with the portion 1 attached,1s placed in storage and theportion 2, bemg ery counter in alphabetical file, as a record of completed repairs, until such-time as the customer calls and presents his claim check and delivery is made. The tube, with the portion 3 attached, is sent to the shops and repaired, the cost data being filled in on the back of the portion 3. When the repairs are completed the tube is sent to storage and the cost data appearing on the section 3 are added to the cost data appearing upon the back of the body portion orsection 2. Theportion 2, because of the entries thereon, of articles received, will show that a tube and rim were received with the casing and that, therefore, thethree should be assembled and mounted the same as when received, and, since the casing, the rim, and the tube each bear the same identification number, they are quickly, and with no chance for error, re-collected and assembled into the group. When the customer or claimant presents his check, he is positively identified with the group, as his check bears the same number as the group, and delivery can at once be made. Should one not the proper claimant present the claim check the deception will be quickly discovered as such a one will not know the name of the true claimant appearing on the alphabetically filedportion 2, as nothing of an identifying character,

except the identification number, is intended to appear on the claim check. After delivery has been made and proper receipts given, theportion 2 is given to the billing clerk as a medium for rendering invoice.

The various captions, or titles, and so forth, and the various lines to define the blanks are conveniently, and as illustrated, printed in ink upon the material of the blank; the tag, in the present preferred embodiment of my invention, appearing, before use and prior to the making of entries thereon, substantially as shown in the drawing.
