DILATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented Feb. 24, 1920.
Application filed March 30, 1918. Serial No. 225,763.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL YLrsTo, a citizen of Finland, residing at Westerly, in the county of Washington and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dilators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvementsin dilators of the expanding type and its object is to provide means for dilating and exercising the vagina to enable it to more readily perform its function at the time of child birth. The invention is intended for use for a period of one month or more previous tochild birth whereby the amount of pain incident to this function is minimized. With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described, pointedout in the appended claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification and in which- Figure 1 is a view of my improved dilator in side elevation.
Fig. 2 is a cross section takenon line 2-2- of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional'view oi" a tubular member employed.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sec tional view of the device.
Like reference characters denote corre- 'sponding parts throughout the several views.
My invention comprises a pair of oppositely disposed curved ribs 1, 2 of counterpart formation to the inner faces of which a plurality ofbearings 3 are fixed, said bearings being arranged inoppositelydisposed pairs. Each of said ribs at one end, is curved to form anose 4. Each of the said bearings ,8 pivotally carries one end of the arms 5 which arms are arranged in pairs and are pivotally secured to the collars 6, 7 8, above and below a shaft 9, the collar 6 being formed integral with orsecured to a rotary hub 10 secured by rivet 11 to agrooved portion 11 of the said shaft and the collar 7 being movable with relation to the said shaft 9 and secured bytie rods 11 to the saidcollar 8 which collar is fast to asleeve 12 which is threaded interiorly for engagement with the threads 13 of the said shaft 9, said sleeve being also provided with ahandle 14. The l said shaft 9 extends entirely through and beyond thesleeve 12 and terminates in a head 15 by means of which said shaft 9 may be rotated and moved longitudinallyrelatively to the saidsleeve 12.
The operator by holding thehandle 14 with one hand may rotate the head 15 to move the shaft 9 longitudinally of the sleeve 7 12 thus moving thecollars 7 and 8 toward or away from the collar 6 and so, through the medium of the arms 5 expanding or con tracting' the dilator by the relative movement of its ribs 1, 2. Instead of rotating the head 15 the operator may hold the same stationary and rotate thehandle 14 if desired to'impart a rotaryv expanding or contracting motion to the dilator. The operator inserts thenose 4 in the vagina with the dilator in contracted position and by (BX-- panding and contracting the same in the manner previously described the organ may be exercised and stretched.
I What is claimed is In a dilator, a threaded shaft, a threaded sleeve arranged upon said shaft, a head car- I ried by said shaft'whereby it may be moved relatively to said sleeve while the latter is held stationary, a handle carried by said sleeve whereby it may be moved relatively to said shaft while the latter is held sta-' tionary, a hub rotative upon said shaft, a collar fixedly carried by said hub,
a collar fast upon said sleeve, a third rotary-expanding or a non-rotary-contracting motion to said ribs when said sleeve is held stationary.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
, EMIL YLISTO. Witnesses:
Amos M. ELSON, CLARENCE E. Roonn.
