CIGARETTE CONTAINER. APPLICATION FILED SEPT-8.1919.
Patented Dec.
a. imam .4 UNITED stratus rA'rErTT cur -0E...
oscaa L. man, or nmaorr, moment CIGARETTE-CONTAINER.
Specification of Letters intent.
Patented Dec. 9, 1919.
Application filed September a, 1919. Serial m5. 322,258.
ings, which form a part of this specification.-
My invention relates to packages, or containers, for cigarettes, and particularlyto that type of a container wherein the cigarettes are inclosed in a paper wrapper folded over at the ends, which is then inserted in aaper cup, the opposite end folds being he d down by the revenue stamp. This is the conventional manner in which all such containers are made.
The object of my invention is to provide an im roved container so constructed that a smal opening may be made at one end and coincident with the opening of the package'and, by virtue thereof, a single cigarette will be lifted from its position in the tightly packed bundle of cirgarettes and may be easily removed.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is an elevation of the paper blank used to form the container.
Fig.- 2 is an end view of the package as the same appears when sealed.
Fig. 3 is an end View of the package with the incised portion removed.
Fig. 4 is a section view showing the re moval strip in position.
Fig. 5 is the same as Fig. 4 showing the action of the removal strip on the cigarette as the package is opened.
Many of the more popular brands of cigarettes are carried in a paper pouch of the type here illustrated. This is. particularly true where it is desired to pack a quantity of cigarettes in one container, as the cardboard box container is cumbersome when it exceeds a certain size and the cost of the cardboard box is considerably more than that of the cheaper pouch form of package.
It will be noted that the removal strip f which hangs downward alongside the paper blank before the same is infolded around the cigarettes is fastened to the section ada ted to be torn out along the line of the per orations above such perforated line, and such strip is of courseznot erforated. The referable location of such strip is 'alongsi e of and inturned underneath the first ci arette.
In the opening of the ackage, t e end fold 1s caught'underneatli its edge'within the perforated section and as the same is pulled upward thesection inclosed by the perforations tears along the line of such perforations and the package is uncovered, as shown at is, Fig. 3. As the tearing out of the perforated section is accomplished the removal strip which is fastened to such section above t e line of the perforations, is lifted and'draws with it thecigarette underneath which it is passed, and the cigarette is removed without mangling in any way,
as shown in Fig. 5.
It will also be noted that the seal binding the opposite sides of the package is unsevered by this process of opening and the package will therefore have'a tendency to retain its natural shape and formation and will not be crushed inwardlyas is the case when the revenue stamp is broken and the entire top of the package is unfastened.
It will be observed that the infolded end of the package which is adapted to .be torn away in the opening thereof extends underneath and is held down with a revenue stamp. The tearing off of this end would break or mutilate the stamp, but the tearing would not be suificient to com letely'sever the stamp breaking the seal whlch binds the op osite sides of the ackage together.
aving thus describ I desire to claim is:
1. In a cigarette ackage, a rectangular wrapper sheet of pliable material wrapped about the cigarettes inclosing the same, a
perforated section lying along the margi--.
nal edge of such wrapper sheet, the weakened line inclosingsuch perforated section adapted to lie in part alon a portion of the circumference of thetop 0 the package and inclose a substantially smaller portion than one-half of the entire top of the package, a flexible strip of substantially similar material attached to such inclosed perforated portion substantially above the line of such perforations and passed down alongside of and in underneath a cigarette. j v
2. In a cigarette package, a wrapper sheet of pliable material wrapped about the ciga rettes with infolded end. portions sealed in such folded relationship, a perforated section lying on, one marginal edge of such ed my invention, what wrapper sheet, the weakened line inclosing such perforated section adapted to lie in part along a portion of the circumference of the top of such package and inclose a portion thereof not covered by the seal of said package, a strip of pliable. material attached to such perforated inclosed portion above the line of such perforations adapted to pass longitudinally along a cigarette'and in underneath the same, substantially as and for the purposecdes'cribed.
.3. In a cigarette container, a wrapper sheet of pliable material wrapped about the -cigarettes with end portions infolded and sealed, a perforated section on the marginal edge of such wrapper sheet, the weakened line inclosing such perforated section adapted to lie-in part along a portion of the circumference of the top of such package and inclose a portion thereof not covered by the seal of said package andinclose the end portion last infolded, a strip of pliable material attached to such perforated inclosed portion above the line of such perforations and adapted to pass longitudinally along a cigarette passing in underneath the same so that when the inclosed perforated portion is removed the cigarette partially encircled by such pliable strip will be lifted partially from the package, substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. In a cigarette container, a wrapper sheet of pliable material wrapped about the cigarettes, with end portions infolded, a stamp sealing such end portions at the top .of the package, a perforated section-on the marginal edge of such wrapper sheet, the weakened line inclosing such perforated section adapted to lie in part along a portion of rette and underneath the same and partially up the other side thereof so that when the perforated section is torn away the cigarette partially encircled by such pliable strip will e partially lifted from the package.
In testimony whereof, I sign this specification.
