Samui,
Easton, in the county;of'Northampton and :Stateof Pennsylvania:e have invented a'certain new and useful Improvement-in Motor- Rotation Percussi\-*eTools,' of which the fol- .lowing is a specification. i
Tl `s invention relates to percussive tools, and' insparticular .to'l form of percussive tool having means, for rotating a drill steel or other devicegada'pted tolbe yusedin said tool.
The objects of the present invention are to provide a percussive tool which, in the example chosen for illustrationyis a hammer drill, with a rotating motor for rotating the drill, the motor being mounted in a detachable casing on one side of the rear end of the tool.
A further object of the invention is to provide improved means for securing the motor casi-ng in position.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the features of construction and operation set :forth in the following specification and illustrated on the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, in which:
Figure 1 shows a top plan View 'of the complete percussive tool, parts being shown in section g- Fig. 2, shows a longitudinal elevation of thetool taken in -section Fig. 3, shows a section of the rotating motor and casing taken --on the line 3-3 ot Fig. 2.
Referring more particulirly to the figures oi the drawing, 1 refers .o the cylinderof' the percussive tool in which. a piston or hammer of any well known typeis adapted to reciprocate. Secured to the forward end of the cylinder 1 is the front head 3 having a recess in which is located an anvil block 4 which lies adjacent to the rear end of the drill steel 5. lSurrounding the drill steel 5 is the chuck 6, inclosed withina rotating member 7 having gear teeth 8 provided on a portion of its surface. The nember 7 and chuck 6 are rotated byaneans of a shaft '9 extending alongside the cylinder' '1 from the rear end andprovided at its vfrliward end with a pinion gear 10 meshing h gear 8.
At the rear end of the cylinder" and preiA the above description it will be seen Iwhen motive Huid is Fig 3, providing llurad "to admit fiitive Ito reclprocate the hammer orpiston 2 `and -rotating motor 12v the `whichpis located aiotatingmotor 12 .com- `prislng a pan of spur gears of equal dianieter, as is usual in this form of motor.. Ashaft 13 isvattached to one ot' the gears of themotor 12 having agear 14 at its end. Thisgear 14 is in mesh with agear 15 provided on the rear end ofthe shaft 9. From that a i construction has been provided whereby supplied to themotor 12 the chuck 6 and consequently the drill steel 5 are rotated.
Referring to Fig. 3 of the drawings, the
motor casing ll is provided with depressions center line of the casing. vWithin the depressionsl are lo-l catedbolts 17 whoseheads 18 almost completely fill the depressions. -In alinement with the recesses 164 areholes 19 proyde'dV for the Shanks of thebolts 17 and directly under thebolt holes 19 4are lugs"20,pro vided as integral parts of the cylinder 1. Thelugs 20 are bored as shown at 21, inV
recesses 16 and holes 1 9 in themotor casing 11, so that thebolts 17 extend through from themotor casing 11 through the casing and also through the lugs, and may beheld firmly in place bysuitable nuts 22 threaded to their lower ends. The construction is such, as will be seen fromthedramings, that the bolts must first be placed in position within themotor casing 11 before thegears 12 are insertedt This, however, .is not objectionable as themotor casing 11 and motor, 12 rarely, require being disassembled afterj once being set in position in thetool, 'and this construction has the advantage that should the v.bolts break they mayreadil) Vne removed and new ones substituted. .i
In rear of the motor 4casing v`l1 and cylinder 1 is the back head 23, clamped iai-any suitable way to hold the cylinder, frontlicad, etc., in position, the method shown'. being theusual side rods 24 shown ,inl Fig.A 1.v A throttle vvalve 25 is located in the back fluid to the cylinder also admitsfluid throughpassgg'26 to the fluid-to the motor r1 2v first passingthrough an automatic-valve 27 to vary the motor.
It is to be understood that the present showing and description disclose only one holes in alin'ement i with quantity of 'fluid required by the rio specific embodiment of the presentinvenltion, and that other forms and modications-` are included 'within the spirit and scope of the invention, as expressed in .the appended claims. v
What I claim 1s: l. In a pereussive tool, a cylinder having .ahammer therein, a rotating motor, a cas- -ing therefor secured to one side of the rear end 'of said cylinder, and a back head f or said tool Joining the rear ends oi sald cyllnder and motor casing.
back head having mot-ive fluid admitting mea-ns for said hammer a-nd rotating motor.
3. In-a, percussive tool, a cylinder having Y a hammer therein, a, rotating motor,l al casing therefor secured to one 'side ofthe rear..
end of said cylinder, securing means l. for said motor easing comprising boltsexteinil-N ing through said motor casing and through projections provided on said cylinder.
4. In a' percussive tool, a cylinder having p a hammer therein, a -rotating motor, a. casing therefor secured toy one side of the rea-r end of said cylinder, securinginea'nsjforsaid motor casing comprising-bolts having their heads Vset inl recesses in said motor ca'- ing, saldfbolts extending through projec4 tions provided in said cylinder.`
` In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
