Description

F. 1. scARncoMBlNED SIGHT AND cLlNoMETER.
APPLICATION FILED MAY l5. 191B.`
'1,31 6,391 e Patented Sept. 16, 1919.
ATTORNEY UNITED YsmeresoFFIon.
FRANCIS J. SCARR, or HnsBRoUoK HEIGHTS, NEW JERSEY.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS J. SCARR, residing at Hasbrouck Heights, Bergen county, inthe State of New Jersey, have invented lcertain new and useful Improvements in vice which will serve both as -a sight and av clinometer.
Further, said invention has for its object to. provide a deviceof the character specified which is particularly adapted for use in connection with any type of gun supported upon a fixed mounting, which mounting may be either permanent or movable.
Further, 'said' invention has for its object to provide a device of thecharacter specified which is particularly adapted for use in laying'a gun for indirect firing.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide a device of the character specified by means of which the elevation and range may be accurately determined, and thereupon lto permit of the piece being duly aimed to "reach lthe desired target or obj ective.
i Other objects will in part be obvious and in part be pointed out hereinafter.
l`'To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends my invention'consists in the novel details of construction, and in the combina'- tion, connection and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and then pointed'oiit in the claims.
In the accompanyingdrawings forming'. part of this specification vwherein'like numorals of reference indicate like parts- Figure lis a side elevationof a machine gun equipped withone form of combined sightand clinometer construction according to and embodying my Said invention;
Fig, 2 Vis an enlarged detail face view of the sight land clinometer detached from the piece, with the leaf adjusted'to 'upright position, and
Fig. 3 is a side elevation fof 'the same. A
Referring to saiddrawings 10 vdenotes the :combined sight and 'clinometer as 'a whole,
comprising a'base 11, :adapted for secure'- m'ent to va gun, fand acurved jsightleaf 12 which is piv'otally secured at its -lower "end specification f Lettersratent.

to said base .11. Thesight leaf 12 is slotted longitudinally, thereby forming twoparallel side members 13, 111 which 'are preferably curved to cor-respond to the arc of a circle having a radius equal to the distance between the front and rear sights of the gun upon which the device, as a whole, is mounted. The inner surfaces oftheside members 13 and v14: lare, provided withVlongitudinal grooves 15 within which works the sliding sight, hereinafterV described;
The lower end of Ithe sight Vleaf 12 is notched to form thebattle sight 16. Thesight leaf 12 is provided at its lower end with registering transverse openings17 'to receive a pin by means of which thesight leaf 12 is pivotally attached to the base l1 upon the gun. j- Thesight leaf 12 vis further provided "at its lower end with forwardly projecting shoulders- 18` which are adapted to engage the Y sight base spring when thedevice -is raised for use, and to beheld iirinl'y under tension of said spring in its upright position.
The front surface of the side member 13'` of the'sight yleaf 1'2'is provided with Aa mil scale, and the corresponding surfaceof theside member 14; is provided with a range scale which v'may be calibrated in yards or meters, as desired. y
V1 9 indicates aslide, c nrve'd Vto correspond to the curvature of theside members 13, 14, of `the sight Vleaf-*12, and having laterally projecting tongues V2O which are received within thelongitudinal grooves 15 lformed in theside members 13, 14. Theslide 19 is cut away at its lower end, as indicated at 21,A in order to permitthe lower end of the slide 19V to Yclear theVr pin passing through theholes 17 inthe side Ymembers 13, 141, when theslide 19 is molvedto its lowermost position'. Theslide 19 is provided, adjacent its lower end, with an'oval opening having a notch in its base constituting 4a directiire sight notch 22, and its front surface is provided with a 'range scale, which readsin the same units of length as 'the range yscajle o n 'the side member 1 4 of the sight leaf Y12'. The graduation marks of the range soja-'le on theslide 19 Vare adaptedito register Vwith the graduation marks ofthe mil scale vonthe side Krneilirber 13.
' 1n arpenteur-face, the slide 129V is pievided with a recess 23130V receive the base 124 by screws 26 passing through holes in thebase 24 and engaging threadedholes 27 in Y face of theside member 13. Theprojection 30 of theclamp 29 carries aset screw 31, by means of which saidslide 19 may be firmly held in position after the same has been properly adjusted upon thesight leaf 12. It will be understood that upon loosening the set screw 81,Y theslide 19 may be adjusted upon thesight leaf 12 until it is in its proper position, after which, theset screw 31 is tightened to hold the same firmly in its adjusted position.
In operation, if it is desired to use the gun for direct lire, it is merely necessary so to adjustytheslide 19 upon thesight leaf 12 that thedirect fire sight 22 registers with the appropriate'mark of the range scale on theside member 14 corresponding to the proper range. The gun is then operated in the usual manner.
If the range and the angle of sight is given, theslide 19 is so adjusted upon thesight leaf 12 that the mark of the range scale on theslide 19, which corresponds to the given range, registers with the mark of the mil scale on theside member 13, corresponding to the given angle of sight. After the slide has been thus adjusted upon thesight leaf 12 and clamped in position by theset screw 31, the gun is adjusted upon its support until thespirit level 25 assumes the true level position, at which time the gun will have the proper elevation or depression for firing under the given conditions.
On firing over a mask, if it is desired to determine the minimum range, theslide 19 is set in the usual manner, to indicate the range and angle of sight of the mask. Theslide 19 is then moved upwardly a distance equal to the number of mils required by the table of mask clearances. The gun is then aimed at the crest of the mask, and clamped against movement. Theslide 19 is now moved upwardly with respect to thesight leaf 12 until thelevel 25 is' in its level position. The range now indicated upon theslide 19 is the minimum range with full mask clearance which it was desired to ascertain.
If it is desired to useV thebattle sight 16, theslide 19 is removed by sliding it from thesight leaf 12, at the upper end thereof, after which thesight leaf 12 is lowered, thus causing thebattle sight 16 to assume its proper position for use.
Having thus described my'said invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:n v
