THE COLUMBIA PLANOGRAPH co.. WASHINGTON. D. c.
ATTORNEY UNITED sTATEs 'PAT NT einen.
TEoFIL miicnowlcz,or VAUXHALL, New JERSEY.
FOUNTAIN-BRUSH. l
Application filed May 24, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be `it known that I, TEOFIL PiEoHowicZ, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Vauxhall, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fountain-Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fountain brushes and particularly to that class of brushes which are designed for use in washing automobile bodies and the like and `has for its principal object the provision of a device of this character which will consist of, a brush head and adjustable valved means arranged to be connected in a suitable supply source and adapted when adjusted to one position to deliver a quantity of water to the head where it will be distributed onto the bristles, while when adjusted to another position will permit of a stream of water to be discharged from the side of the brush to ush or spray the surface to be cleansed.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangements of parts which will hereinafter be fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a single and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitations are necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modiications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the brush.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section therethrough with parts in full lines.
Fig. 3 is a section taken approximately on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a section on an enlarged scale taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a vertical section through the locking device.
In the drawings, I have shown ahollow head 10 which is provided with a cleaning surface, preferably bristles arranged in bunches as at 11. Thewall 12 of said head is provided withperforations 13 by means of which liquid flowing to the head will be free to discharge through theperforations 13 and onto the mentioned bristles.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 15, 1919. Serial No. 236,353.
At the center of the head is aiXed disk 14 provided with an annular series ofkeeper passages 15. Passing through said disk is a.plug valve 16, the same having aportway 17 which opens in the direction of the hollow head, while at 18 is illustrated an arcuate branch of said portway which is adapted to register with aportway 19 formed in the extension20 of a revolvingvalve casing 21.
The saidextension 20 is provided with a slidinglocking bolt 22 which is adapted for interchangeable engagement in thepassages 15 whereby the casing can be held against rotation. The bolt is normally held in a locked position under the action of asuitable spring 23 as shown in Fig. 5. Theplug 16 is provided with aportway 24 which is arranged to coincide with a portway 25 in theextension 20 and adischarge orifice 26 in thecasing 21 when the latter is adjusted to one position. When in such position a stream of water may be projected laterally from thecasing 21 to be utilized for flushing a surface after it has been first cleansed by the action of the bristles 11. The extension 2O has connection with apipe 27 which is arranged to be connected with any suitable water supply source.
The valve plug is provided with apacking gasket 28 which bears against the under side of the plug to prevent leakage. Passing through this gasket is astem 30 which is free for vertical sliding movement. This stem is provided with astraight face 31 so that anintervening space 32 is formed between said stem and the walls of theportway 17. Beneath thegasket 28 the stem iS provided with ahead 33 for a purpose to be presently explained.
The mechanism for regulating the iow of liquid through theportways 17 and 19 consist of the mentionedstem 30 and acam 34, the latter being mounted to slide in thehead 10 beneath thehead 33 of the stem 30p. It is provided with a rack surface 35 which meshes with apinion 36 on a revolvingstem 37. This stem extends through thehead 10 in order that it may be conveniently manipulated from the outside thereof. By rotating the same sliding movement is imparted to the rack 35 so that theinclined surface 38 of the cam can be moved under the head of thestem 30 as will be seen upon reference to Figs. 2 and 3. Aguide member 39 is arranged in the head and is adapted to hold the cam against casual separation from thehead 33. As shown the cam passes over only a small portion of the head so as to permit of a full discharge of water to the head and from theportway 17 when Communication between the latter and theportway 19 is established. Any desired adjustment of the stem oan be made to oause the flow of water between the gasket 2S and thewall 29 of thehead 10 to be regulated according to ones preference. An adjustment of thestem 37 can be retained by a jam nut Zl0 which is arranged to co-act with a shoulder 41 on said stem.
l/Vhat is Claimed as new is 1. A fountain brush comprising a hollow head having a perforated wall, a valve provided with a plurality of independent passages, and mounted on said hollow head, one of said passages communicating with said hollow head, a easing for said valve provided with a plurality of passages adapted to register with the passages in said valve to alternately supply water to the hollow head and project a stream of water laterally from the casing, and means carried by the head and movable into the said communicating passages to control the flow of water to said hollow head.
2. A fountain brush comprising a hollow head having a perforated wall, a valve provided with a passage and communicating with said head, a easing for said valve provided with a passage adapted to register with said first named passage whereby to supply water to said hollowhead, and means for controlling the entrance of water into Said head comprising a valve disposed within said head and adapted to cover the end of said first named passage, a stem on said valve projecting into said first named passage and of less diameter than the latter, a Cam member formed in wedge shape and Slidable within said head in position to engage said valve whereby to limit the degree of opening thereof, a rack bar formed on said cam member, and a pinion engaging said rack bar and having a stem extending eXteriorly of said head.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
TEOFIL PIECHOWICZ.
