Description

W. S. DU CHARME. WRENCH. APPLICATION FILED SEPT.27. 191's.
1,293,735.. Patented Feb.11,1919.
2% 5 m X T WILLIAM S. DU GHARME, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb. 11, 1919.
Application filed September 27, 1918. Serial No. 255,931.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. DU CHARME, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wrenches of that type having a shank and a turret head pivoted thereto, the head being provided with multiple jaws. The object of the invention is to provide an improved wrench of' this type particularly with novel means for holding the head in desired position for convenient use of any one of the jaws, said means comprising a cam which is pivoted to the shank and-which may be engaged at various places on the edge of the head to hold the same in fiXed position.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a plan of wrench.
Fig. 2 is a side view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 6 indicates the shank handle. This is conveniently made by bending or folding a flat metal bar to form two similar sides opposite each other and between which the head and the catch are pivoted. The sides are indicated respectively at 7 and 8, and each is punched and pressed to form a tubular bushing 9, the ends of which meet at 10 between the two sides, to form a complete bushing or sleeve for a rivet 11 which fastens the two sides of the shank member together; and the bushing also forms a pivot for therotary head 12. This head has a plurality offixedjaws 13 of different sizes, and it may be turned to present any one of these jaws to active position. 7
The sides of the shank are also pressed or punched inwardly as indicated at 14 and these bosses form. a pivot on which thecam latch 15 turns. This latch or fastening device has a cam head or face shown at 16 adapted to engage in any one of the series ofrecesses 17 in the outer edge of thehead 12 as shown in full lines in Fig. 1, the latch having afinger piece 18 which projects outwardly in position for its operation. The shape of thecam face 16 and therecesses 17 is such that the cam will release automatically when the head is turned or pressure is applied in one direction, but when pressure is applied the other way, the cam takes hold in the recesses and tightens under increased pressure, after it is once thrown into contact by manipulating the projectingtail 18 thereof.
By the means described a very cheap and serviceable wrench is produced, which may be quickly set to use any one of the jaws and which will be firmly held in adjusted position. The. half sleeves or bushings 9 serve to space the sides apart, and also to house the rivet and to form the pivot for the rotary head.
I claim:
1. A wrench comprising a handle having opposite side pieces with inwardly projecting bushings which meet to space the sides apart, a fastening device extending through said bushings, a rotary head provided with multiple jaws mounted between the sides to turn on said bushings, and means carried by the handle to engage the head and hold the same in adjusted position.
2. A wrench comprising a handle having opposite side plates, a rotary head pivoted between said plates and provided with multiple jaws, the outer edge of the head having recesses therein, and a cam latch pivoted between said sides and adapted to engage in any one of said recesses to hold the head at adjustment, the recesses and cam face being shaped to release when the head is turned one way and to engage and look when the head is turned the other way,
In testimony whereof I do aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM S. DU CHARME.
