DEVICE FOR DISTRIBUTING AND AUTOMATICALLY CONTROLLING THE DELIVERY OF LIQUIDS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 4, 1919.
Application filed December 28, 1917. Serial No. 209,304.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Leon JEAN Become, a citizen of France, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Distributing and Automatically Controllin the Delivery of Liquids, of which the Following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for d1s tributing and controlling the flow of liquids and the object of the invention is to provide a device for fillin or partially filling a receptacle with a uid and maintaining the level of the fluid at a certain height and prevent overfilling thereof. The lnvention is rimaril although not necesarily adapted or the lling of receptacles with drinking water such as are used in factories, office buildings and the like and is adapted to fill a receptacle or drinking vessel up to a cer tain level to prevent the overfilling thereof, means being rovided for automatically regulating the eight to which the fluid will rise in the vessel or receptacle. The device is also suitable for other uses but the foregoing is believed to be sufiicient for the understandin of the invention.
With the oregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of arts constitutin the invention to be heremafter specificalTy described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing which forms a part hereof wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, but It is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the matter hereinafter claimed.
The drawing presented is a vertical central sectional view of a device embodying the present invention somewhat diagrammatically arranged.
The device embodies a storage reservoir 1 into which a liquid is introduced through afeed pipe 2 the flow of which iscontrolled by means of a valve 3. Connected with the lower end of the reservoir 1 is anoutlet pipe 4 communicating with anupwardlyprojecting tank 5 and from the lower end of which extends an upwardly -curved discharge pipe 6, the upper end of which is rovided with a packmg gland 7 in whic is shiftably mounted the short leg of agooseneck 8, constituting a siphon. Connected near the lower end of the longer leg of the siphon is avent pipe 8 containing a controllingvalve 10 and attached to the upper end of thevent pipe 9 and in open communication therewith is aflexible tube 11 forming a continuation of thevent pipe 9 and from the tube 11 apipe 12 extends to and connects the upper end of the reservoir 1. By providing the packing gland 7 and for thesiphon 8 the latter may be raised or lowered at will so as to accurately position thelonger discharge end 13 of thesiphon 8.
In practice thelower end 13 of thesiphon 8 will be inserted in some receptacle, such as adrinkin cup 14.
In operation the reservoir 1 is partially filled with any suitable fluid through theinlet 2 and flows down into thetank 5 and the exhaust 6 and rises to the level of thedotted line 15 which is on the level with the to iof the siphon and thereby fills the siphon su ciently to start the flow of fluid therethrough into thereceptacle 14. As soon as the fluid in thereceptacle 14 has risen sufiiciently toclose thelower end 13 of thesiphon 8 the passage of air through thevent pipes 9, 11 and 12 into the reservoir is arrested and further flow of fluid through the siphon is interrupted thereby controllin the level of the fluid in thereceptacle 14 an this is further controlled by vertically shifting thesiphon 8 whenever desired. The filling of thereceptacle 14 lowers the level of the fluid in theopen tank 5 as indicated in the drawings below theline 15 and as the filling of thereceptacle 14 interrupts further flow of fluid from the reservoir 1 into the tank the level thereof remains substantially as indicated. When therece tacle 14 is removed temporarily, such as a (iiinking glass is removed from the support the vent through thepipes 9, 11 and 12 are opened ermitting the fluid to rise to the level of thedotted line 15 thereby refilling the siphon and permitting the flow of fluid through the siphon which will continue until thereceptacle 14 is replaced and partially filled to again interrupt the passage of air through the vent. If it is desired at any time thevalve 10 in the vent pi e may be closed during a prolonged remova of therece tacle 14 thereby preventing the rise of uid in thetank 5 sufiiciently high to reach the level of the up er portion of thesiphon 8 and establish a ow therethrough.
I claim:
1. A device of the character described comprising a storage reservoir provided with means for introducing a fluid thereto, an outlet pipetherefrom in open communication with an upright tank, said tank provided with a discharge pipe, a goose-necksiphon having one end inserted in the discharge opening and the other depending below said tank, a vent pipe connected near the lower end of said siphon and further connected with the upper part of said reservoir above the level of the fluid therein.
2. In a device of the character described,
Copies of this patent may be obtained for live the combination with a storage reservoir, means to supply a fluid to said reservoir, an outlet to said reservoir the end of which is provided with a packing gland, a tank in open communication with said i e, a siphon the shorter leg of which is shii ta 1y mounted in said packing gland, a vent pipe connected to and near the extremity of the longer end of said siphon, a valve in said vent pipe, a flexible tube connected with the vent pipe, and a pipe leading from said flexible tube to the upper portion of said storage reservoir above the level of the fluid therein.
In testimony whereof I have hereuntoset my hand.
LEON JEAN BROCHE.
