Description

Patented Nov. 12, 1918.
INVENTOR m'gwml 3L @mmmv,
WITNESSES ATTORNEY CORPORAL '1. DONALDSON, 0F COLUMBUS, OHIO.
MEASURING INSTRUMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 12, 1918.,
Application filed March 28, 1917. Serial No. 158,040.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CoRroRAL T. DONALD- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Measuring Instruments, of which the'followingis a speci- 'fication.
This invention appertains broadly to the measuring instrument art, and has for its primary object, the provision of an instrument for use in conjunction with the cutting of keyways in shafting and similar devices.
The invention contemplates the provision of an instrument of the character described, whereby the planing or laying off ofthe shafting may be eliminated, by the provision of a tool which is provided with a casing or bracket member, the tool being provided further with a protractor, which may be used in ascertaining the desired position of a proposed key way.
The invention may be briefly, stated to comprise a frame, or casing member, which is provided with a suitable recess for receiving the shafting, a clamping member for use in conjunction with the frame, whereby the same. may be securely ailixed or clamped to the shafting, a protractor rotatably supported upon the casing, and a spirit level used in conjunction with said protractor whereby the exact positioning of theshaft may be facilitated. V
All of the foregoing, together with additional, advantageous arrangement of parts of the preferred embodiment of my invention will be clear from the specific description hereinafter contained, when read in connection with theaccompanying drawings. forming a part hereof. wherein the preferred embodiment of the inve tion is illustrated for the purpose of facilitating a full Lnderstanding of the present improvement.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation; and Fig. 2 is a transverse sect on therethrough taken on thelines 22 of Fig. 1.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings. wherein like or corresponding parts are designated by like or corresponding numerals throughout the several views there f, .1 provide a frame or casing mem-= ber designated in its entirety, as at 1, the casing having arranged substantially concentrically thereof a circular opening 2, which is adapted to receive and be clamped upon the sha t'ting upon which the key ways or the like are to be cut. Within the marginal edge of the frame, adjacent the opening 2 is akey element 3, which is suitably received within a cut out portion arranged in the frame, as at 4, the purpose of which shall be subsequently apparent. The lower portion of the frame 1 is provided with a substantially square opening 5, which is adapted to receive a slidably mountedclamping block 6, the upper face of the clamping block being provided with a substantially V-shaped bearing surface, whereby the milling of the shaft to be received by said frame, may be expedited. To provide for means whereby this sliding clamping member may be adjusted within the squared opening 5 and held in its adjusted position. I secure to the lower face of the frame 1. a
bar 7. by means ofscrews 8, or other suit-' able fastening devices. The shape of the bar 7 is such as to conform with that of the frame 1, the faces thereof being flush with the respective faces of the frame 1. A screw threaded shank member 9 is adapted to be received by the bar 7. within an interiorly threaded opening 10. the upper end of the screw threaded shank m mber hav ing arranged thereon a swivel end 11, which is adapted to be enga ed by the pin 12 arranged tra sverselv of theclampi g member 6. while upon its outer extr mity. I provide ahandle portion 13. which may be milled as at 14 in order that the same may be readilv rotated. A swivel member 15 may be also threaded into one side of the frame 1. as at 16. the purpose of which shall be more fully hereinafter described.
Suitably mounted upon the upper face of the frame 1 and. secured th reto by means of screws. or the like. as at 17; is asecond housing member 18. on which is form d an outwardly extendingmember 19. which member is reces ed as at 20. the recessed portion having arranged conce trically thereof an opening 21. Into this recess 20 I place a circular dalmember 22. which is provided with. adjacent its marginal edges, 21. series of graduations as designated at 23,
while upon the upper edge of themember 20, I place the graduation as designated at 24, the same denoting the vertical axis or plane of the shafting. Secured to thedial 22, at a point slightly below its center, is a spirit level 25, the same being supported 'within a suitable casing member, which in turnis secured to said dial by screws or other fastening devices27. Thedial portion 22 is provided with, upon its reverse face, a threaded sleeve or extension 28, which is adapted to be engaged by a thumb screw 28, which thumb screw is suitably positioned within a cut out portion 29,.arranged in the rear face of theelement 19, and it is so positioned as to be readily rotated.
As above specified, the present invention is intended foruse particularly for moving the shaft to its correct position, after a key way has been formed therein, to allow the cutter to engage the shaft at a proper distance from the first formed way to form the next key way-therein, Therefore, afterone key-way has-been formed in the shaft,th e frame is positioned thereon and is clamped in position by the member 6iandat this time the dial? is rotated to a desired number of degrees in a desired direction, measuring off from the graduation 24-thedesireddegree uponthe circular dial. with reference tothe graduations on this dial. As is-obvious, when the frame is clamped upon the shaft thekey 3 will be fitting within the first formed key wayvon the shaft and for this reason the frame may be swung in a desired direction by gripping theelement 15 and moving the same. The; swinging .of the keyv will of course cause theshaft to be rotated, in the same direction and when the bubble in the spirit level-is in its normal position-intermediate the ends of the level, itis obvious that the same has been movedfar enough with respect-to the number of degrees of graduat on the-dial has been moved to, thus indicating that, the shaft having the clamping means upon its end has been moved far enough to be disengaged-by. the key. forming mechanism for its nextoperationor format on of the next key way. The, framemay "hen be removed for permittingfree, access to the entire length of theshaft. Fromthis description. itshould be understood thatthe de ice presented is notintendedin anyway to form the key way and isnot carried upon the shaft after the shaft has been moved to ts correct positioning for the formation ofa ke way. but is intended to be used for facil tating the actual moving of the shaftto such a position as to permit the: key way "or rg mechanism to properly engage the nft at the correct distance from the first f:7-?( f fey way where the next key Way is o e formed. 7
It will be appreciated by workers in this :rt, that I have provided a tool which will dispense the heretofore intricate and laborious task of laying off shafting in order that the proper positions for cutting the key ways may be ascertained, as well as providingfor a time saving'instrument. Various sized key ways may be milled or cut in the shafting by putting or replacing the key '3 with larger or smaller key, as conditions or preferences may dictate, within the recessed portions 4.
Different arrangements from the parts herein shown for producing the desired results-may be employedtogether withthe mechanical equivalent of some or all-.of said parts without departing from; the spirit of the invention or the scope of; the appended claims.
Having thus fully described "my invention, what I claim to be new and desire to'secure by Letters Patent, is
