To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PETER N. FoRsY'r'H, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented new and useful Improvements in Trench- Tools, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention has reference generally to improvements in tools and more particularly relates to a trench tool.

It is the primary aim andobject of the present invention to provide a device of the above character designed for use in digging trenches and in reality embodies in itself an ax, mattock, hoe and pick.

It is an equally important object of. the present invention to provide a device of the above character the construction of which is novel and is capable of being mounted on a handle and conveniently manipulated.

Among the other aims and objects of this invention may be recited the provision of a device of the character described with a view to compactness, and in which the number of parts are few, the construction simple, the cost of production low and the efficiency high.

Other improvements and novel details in the construction and arrangement of the various parts of the apparatus will be brought out more in detail in the description to follow, which for a clear understanding of the invention should be considered in connection with the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, and wherein is disclosed for the purpose of illustration, a convenient and satisfactoryembodiment of the invention. It is to be noted in this connection that minor changes in the construction and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the principle of operation of the various parts. 1

accompanying drawing, there is provided the improved tool embodying an eye 1 designed for detachably receiving ahandle 2 while projecting in opposite directions from the eye areblades 3 and 4 both of which are tapered toward their outer ends as indicated by the numeral 5, while the extreme outer ends are beveled to provide cutting edges 6. Theblades 3 and 4 are also tapered toward their upper edges as at 7 while the upper edges are in turn sharpened as at 8. Subsequent to sharpening the tool it is desired that the blade 4 be heated and twisted as at 9 and arranged in a plane at right angles to the plane of oneblade 3 thus disposing the sharpened. edge 8 on one side of the tool as indicated. This blade 4 is capable of being used in the capacity of a mattock, hoe or pick while theblade 3 may be used in the capacity of an ax or as a pick. It it apparent therefore that the structure provides in effect a combination tool while the cutting edges 6, 7 and 8 are so positioned that they may be effectively brought into use when the operator desires to make a peculiar stroke or cut. The device would also be useful in lumber camps; by farmers, miners, prospectors, etc. I

If desired, instead of twisting the blade 4 the same may be arranged in the first instance in a plane at right angles to the plane of theblade 3, this of course depending on the mode of manufacture.

It is believed that in view of the forego ing description, a further detailed descrip- 7 from the scope thereof and it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limited sense. It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claim is intended to cover all the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the lnventlon WhlCll as a matter of language might be said to fall therebetween.
