MEANS FOR FACILITATING THE POURING 0F LIQUID CONTENTS FROM CANS TINS, AND THE LIKE.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 29. IQIB;
Patented Apr. 2, 1918.
WILLIAM DEVEN'ISH MEARES. OF CHRISTCHURCH, NEW ZEALAND.
MEANS FOR FACILITATING 'IHE POURING 0F LIQUID CONTENTS FROM CANS, TINS, AND v v THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 2, 1918..
Application filed September 29, 1916. Serial No. 122,832.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM DEVENISH ll/IEARns, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 135 Hereford street, Christchurch, in the Dominion of New Zealand, have invented new and useful Improvements in Means for Facilitating the Pouring of Liquid Contents from Cans, Tins, and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tins, cans and the like used for containing petrol and other liquids, its object being to provide a construction whereby the pouring out of the contents may be facilitated.
It has been proposed hitherto to effect this purpose by employing a small piece or flap of thin metal soldered along its upper edge around one of the vertical corners of the tin by which arrangement the said flap extends downward from the said soldered joint against the side of the vessel and does not therefore occupy any appreciable space in packing. With this construction for the purpose of pouring out the contents a suitable hole is formed in the corner of the can above the point at which the flap is attached and the latter bent upward to form a bib or spout to direct the flow and prevent any of the'liquid' tricklingdown the side and so being spilled.
It has been found in practice however that in cases where the metal flap has been soldered along a straight edge, as above described, considerable difliculty is experienced in satisfactorily bending the metal flap upward without breaking the soldered joint. The device has therefore proved of little or no use for the purpose it is intended to serve.
of being conveniently and satisfactorily employed.
In order that the nature of the invention and its construction may be fully under Copies of this patent may be obtained for It is the object of the present invention stood, reference will now be made to the accompanying sheet of drawings in which Figure 1. is a perspective view showing a corner of a tin with the flap attached according to the present invention, and,
Fig. 2. is a similar view but showing the flap bent upward in readiness for pouring out the contents.
1 is the tin of the usual rectangular form and 2 is the flap which is attached along itsupper edge 3 around the corner of the tin at a point beneath the upper end of the latter so as to permit of such corner of the tin being pierced as by means of ahole 4 above the flap.
According to the present invention, theupper edge 3 of the flap, instead of being straight as heretofore is of V-shape, that is to say, sloping downward from either side of an apex in the middle and the soldered seam of such flap around the corner of the tin follows such contour.
By this construction the flap when attached will fit neatly around the corner of the tin in the required manner for packing as in Fig. 1, while on account of the peculiar shape of its upper edge, such flap may be conveniently bent upward into the form of a spout as shown in Fig. 2.
I claim In combination, a rectangular can for holding liquids, and having a discharge opening formed in one vertical corner there of, and an elongated strip of metal, the up per end of which is of V-shape formation and is soldered to the said vertical corner of said can at a point below said opening, said strip normally lying contiguous to said can and the lower portion of said strip adapted to be bent upwardly and outwardly to form a spout.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM DEVENISH MEARES.
