VETERINARY INSTRUMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 6, 1917.
Application filed April 11, 1916. Serial No. 90,294. i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SOLA B. DUNN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Veterinary Instruments, of which the following is a specification. 2
This invention relates to veterinary instruments and the purpose is to provide a device adapted for use in relieving a constipated or clogged condition of the alimentary tract, particularly the colon, of a horse or other animal.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a device which may be caused to engage the rectum of a horse, for instance, and which may then be manipulated .to effect a loosening and discharge of the clogged feces in the colon or other part of the alimentary tract. A further object is to provide an instrument which may be operated in some respects as a syringe for the purpose above indicated. Still another object is to provide an instrument comprising means for introducing a liquid or other loosening medium into the colon of a horse, for instance, in combination with means for sealing up the lower end of the alimentary tract until the liquid'has effected a loosening or dissolution of theclogged matter above that point. A further feature is the provision'of an apertured member adapted to enter the rectum of an animal and comprising means for introducing a fiu1d into the colon, in oomblnation wlth a flexible member which may be inflated to seal or close 2 the rectum below or at the rear of the mouth of said member. Still another feature is the provision'of a device of the kind Fig. 2, is a longitudinal sectional view of the device;
gig. 3, is a rear end elevation of the same; an
Fig. 1, is a sectional view taken onthe line 1 4 of Fig. 2. I
Referring to the drawings, the plunger or nozzle 10 comprises a body portion'll which carries at its forward end a head orcap 12. Themembers 11 and 12 are provided with centrally located alining apertures in which are mounted the tubes orpipes 13 and 14 respectively, the tube 1% of the cap being constructed to project into and form athreaded engagement with thetube 13 of thebody member 11. Thecap 12 has somewhat the form of a truncated cone, having preferably a slight convexity on its annular surface, whereby it will readily engage the rectum of an animal. An annular flange 11 is formed on the body portion 11 adjacent the forward end thereof, this flange being spaced from thecap 12 bv the reduced portion 11 which has a square or other suitable non-circular cross section.
A diaphragm 15 formed of rubber for other suitable elastic material, is mounted on the reduced portion 11 of the plunger forming a part of the engaging member. This diaphragmcomprises an annular projecting double sheet 15 and a hub portion 15", which fits closely between the' flange 11 and thecap, and which'is provided with a suitable aperture adapted to fit closely the surface of the part ll", whereby the dia phragm is held in non rotative engagement with the plunger. A supply tube 16' of preferably, rubber or the likeleads to the diaphragm 15 through the flange '11 which is preferably of slightly greater diameter than the largest part'o'f the Thistube 16 is preferably embedded in a groove formed in and extending longitudinally of the body member 11. Theparts 11 and 12 are preferably formed of hard wood, al-, though other suitable materials may be used if desired.
At its rear end the body member 11 carries an arcuate flange 11 on its under side. Secured to this flange by screws 17 is a plate 18 having an outwardly directed arcuate flange 18 around its lower and lateral edges. Thetube 16 leads through this plate and thepipe 13 also projects therethrough to engage the valve 19 having a serrated mouth portion 19 adapted to be connected to a suitable source of water or other liquid supply. Thetube 16 is adapted to be con nected to a supply of compressed air or .the like and a stop cock 20 is located therein for controlling said supply.
For the purpose of securing the device in position the flange 1-8 of the plate 1-8 is provided at its lowermost portion and on its lateral sides with slots 21 which are engaged by thestraps 22 which are secured to the plate. The position of the device engaging the rectum of a horse 23 is shown in Fig. 1, where the horse is illustrated by dotted lines. Thelower strap 22 passes downwardly between the legs of the horse and the other straps pass around the haunc'hes of the horse and forwardly at its sides.
All of the straps are secured to the surcingle 2a which passes around the body of the horse. Buckles are provided to permit detachment and adjustability of the straps. A shoulder strap 25 is .connected to therings 24 of the surcingle thus preventing rearward displacement .01? the harness and other parts of the apparatus. r
In the operation of the instrument the nozzle or plunger 10 is caused to engage the rectum of the horse, as illustrated'in Fig. l for instance, and thestraps 22 are then connected to the surcingle .or other support whereby the device is held in ll ti l fi Position with pect t0 the an mal. Th
tubes 13, and 16 are connected to supplies of Water and compressed air, respectively, with the cooks l9 and 20 closed. The cock 20 is then opened, permitting the compressed fluid to inflate the diaphragm 15', as shown in Fig. 1 and as represented by dotted lines in Fig. 2, and thereby sealing or closing up the rectum 23 of the horse. The cock 19 is then opened and the liquid forced through the duct of the plunger into the int stinal tract in front of the diaphragm which serves to prevent the escape of the liquid, until it has been retained inthe intestines a suflicient length of time toefiect a loosening or softening of the clogged mattertherein. .After the desired quantity of liquid has ca'a s 0 h s we: m y b exam t been introduced through the plunger, the cock 19 may be closed and the liquid permitted to remain in the intestinal tract a suitable period of time, after which the diaphragm is deflated and the instrument removed. It will then be observed that the diaphragm when deflated will fold over thecap 12 or the flange 11 according to the direction of movement of the device and that the parts of the device are so shaped as to permit the ready insertion and withdrawal of the plunger. The diaphragm has .a non-rotative engagement with the plunger thereby preventing"relative movement of those members which might sever the connection of the diaphragm with the tube leading thereto. When it is des-i-red to clean or repair the various parts, thecap 12 may he disengaged from the body portion and the diaphragm withdrawn.
Although the construction and operation of the apparatus have been particularly ;de scribed for purposes of illustration, it will be understood that it may be embodied in various forms without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
In a device of the class described, the combination with a plunger having a passageway extending longitudinally therethrough, said plunger having a radially re duced portion forming shoulders on opposite sides thereoiiof an annular inflatable diaphragm radially surrounding said plunger and fitting closely around said reduced por- 'tion thereof, whereby sz'r idshoulders prevent movement of said diaphragm longitudinally on said. plunger, said reduced portion of the plunger being angular in cross section and the opening of said diaphragm conforming to such angular cross section, and a conduit secured to saidplunger and connected with said diaphragm for supplying an inflating fluid thereto;
my name.
, SOLA B. DUNN.
