To all whom it may concern. I
Be it known that I, WARREN M. FRIsBIE, a citizen 01"- the Unlted States, residing at Ypsilanti, in the county of VVashtenaw and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Circular-Saw Guard, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains to saw guards, and aims to provide a novel and improved device ofthat character for use in connection with circular saws. I
It'is the object of the invention to provide a circular saw guard embodying anov'el assemblage of the component elements, the device being adjustable tosuit the conditions and effectively serving its oliice of protecting the saw'and preventing injury either by objects thrown by the saw, or the accidental falling of a person over the saw.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the com-' bination andarrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made with in the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device as applied.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional detail taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.

In carrying out the invention, there is provided a sheetmetal hanger plate 1 having a flange 2 extending at an angle from its upper end and adapted to be secured in any suitable manner to the bottom of the table 3 in rear of thecircular saw 4. A slide plate 5 bears against one side of thehanger plate 1, and is provided with lips 6 struck therefrom and working in horizontal slots 7 with which theplate 1 is provided, whereby to guide the slide plate 5 for horizontal adjustments, the slots 7 being longer than Specification of Letters Patent.

fiat bracket 9is provided atits lower end with a depending flat shank l0 resting against the plate 5 and fitting slidably'betweentheflanges 8. The bracket 9 is of semi-crescent shape, being curved forwardly so as to overhang the'saw. The
bracket 9- is disposed in the sameplaneasthe saw band projects upwardly above the table 3 to work in the slot or kerf cut in the wood :or stock by the saw. Theshan'k 10 of the bracketis provided with a downwardly openingvertical slot 11 for receiving abolt 12 extending through a central opening or aperture of the plate 5, and a horizontalelongated slot 12 of theplate 1. Anut 13 is threaded upon thebolt 12 to clamp theplates 1 and 5 andshank 10 together, .'suit able washers being used upon the bolt if desired. By loosening thenut 13, the slide plate 5 can beslid horizontally toward and away from thesawto adjust the bracket 9 I likewise, and the bracket can be adjusted vertically. lVhen thenut 13 is tightened, the parts are clamped in the positions to which they have been adjusted, it thus being possible to adjust the bracket 9 both horizontally and vertically in the plane of thesaw 4.
Adjustably carried by the bracket 9 is a main guard member 14: of inverted U-shaped cross section, preferably constructed of sheet metal. The backor web portion of themember 14 is adapted to seat on .the upper curved edge of the bracket 9 with the flanges or wings of themember 1 1 depending at the opposite sides of the saw, whereby to provide the desired protection. One flange of the member lt is provided at one end with anextension 15 adapted to overlap one side of the bracket 9, and the corresponding end of the other flange of the member 14: has a tongue 16 offset toward theextension 15, said extension and tongue being provided at their free ends with apertures 16 receiving a bolt 17. The bracket 9 has a series of open slots ornotches 18 extending 'from its upper and rearcurved edge for receiving the bolt 17 Thus, when the bolt 17 is loosened, the member 1-1 can be placed on the bracket 9 and moved longitudinally to move the bolt 17 into the desired slot ornotch 18, themember 14 seating on the upper edge of the bracket 9.to hold it in thede- I sired position. The bolt 17 can then be tightened for clamping themember 14 in place, the bracket being clamped between theextension 15 and tongue 16. By placing the bolt 17 in thevarious slots 18, the anguhaving theextension 15 and tongue 16.
Thus, the hook 120 can be pivotally engaged downwardly through the slot 21, as seen in Fig. 1, with the flanges of the member 19 overlapping and depending from the flanges of themember 1% to ride on the material being cut. The member 19 can be applied and removed readily, and is swingable vertically to coeperate with the member 1a to properly protect the saw.
The various parts are constructed chiefly of sheet metal, being simple and inexpensive to manufacture, and the parts can be readily assembled and applied.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1, A saw guard embodying an upwardly projecting bracket having a curved upper edge and a series of guard engaging portions, and a guard member seatable slidably on said upper edge and having means engageable with said portions to hold the guard member in various angular positions.
A saw guard embodying an upwardly projecting bracket having a curved upper edge provided with notches, and a guard member seating slidably on said upper edge and having means engageable in said notches for pivotally connecting the guard member with the bracket so that the guard member seats on said upper edge of the bracket.
3. A saw guard embodying main and secondary guard members each of inverted U- shaped section, means for supporting the main guard member, the secondary guard member straddling the main guard member, the main guard member having a slot near one end, and the secondary guard member having a hook engaging through said slot to pivotally connect it with the main guard member.
