J. H. PETTIT.
EMBROIDERY HOLDER APPLICATION HLED APR.20. 1915.

. can be readily operated to secure a sheet of imp.
JOHN H. PETTET, OF GREAT FALLS, MONTANA.
EMBROIDERY-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented oct. 16, rm *7.
Application filed April 20, 1915. Serial No. 22,659.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. Pnrrir, a citizen 'of the United States, residing at Great Falls, in the county of Cascade and State of Montana, have invented new and useful Improvements in EmbroideryHolders, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to provide a simple device for use in. connection with embroidery and materials to be embroidered, and in which the material to be embroidered will be held in tension so as to permit of readily embroidering the material.
The invention contemplates, among other features, the provision of a device which material or a portion thereof in tension so as to permit of embroidering the same, and to this end use is made of a ring and a bandlike member encircling the ring, with the portion of the material to be embroidered interposed between the ring and band-like member, andmeans for holding the bandlike member tightly against the ring to secure and hold the material in the desired tension.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the v views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view showing apiece of material applied to my device and ready to be embroidered;
Fig. 2 1S a vertical sectional view taken through the structure shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the ring.
Fig. elis a plan view showing the band detached from the ring member.
Referring more particularly to the views, I provide an annular ring 10 which is of a channel. shape in cross section to forma i groove 11, a band member 12 being provided and preferably formed of a single piece of wire bent in a circle and having its ends terminating in diametrically outwardly extendingshanks 13, withknobs 14 on the extremities of said shanks, one of said shanks being slightly bent upwardly and the other slightly bent downward so that the shanks can be interlocked and the knobs retain the shanks in interlocked position, as shown.
In the use of the device described a sheet ofmaterial 15 is placed over the ring .10,
after which the band member 12 is arranged to encircle the ring and loosely lie in thegroove 11 into which a portion of the sheet of material is slightly pressed by the application of theband member to the ring. Now upon drawing, the shanks .13 together and engaging the knobs so as to interlock the shanks with one crossing the other and the knobs in superposed relation, it will be seen that the diameter of the band member will be decreased so that the same will fit tightly in the groove and bind the sheet of material lying in the groove therein. At the same time the tightening of the band member in the manner mentioned, in the ring 10, will also tend to pull the sheet of material slightly so as to increase the tension thereof within the circumference of the ring 10, the sheet of material being now in a position to permit of easily embroidering a monogram, initials or other suitable matter thereon;
Having thus described my invention, 1
claim:
1. In an embroidery holder, the combination with a ring providing a continuous groove, of a band member encircling the ring, shanks formed with the band member, and knobs on the free ends of the shanks, said shanks being adapted to be drawn together and held in interlocked relation by said knobs to reduce the diameter of the band member and cause the same to lie in the groove of the ring, one of said shanks being bent upwardly and the other said shank being bent downwardly to facilitate the engagement of said shanks and the holding of said shanks in cross relation and contacting with one another by the engagement of said knobs.
2. An embroidery holder embodying a channel like ring providing an annular groove, a member encircling the ring, diametrically extending shanks formed by the ends of the band member, said shanks being bent slightly in opposite directions and adapted to be drawntoward each other so that one shank will overlie the other, and knobs on said shanks to hold said shanks in overlying engagement.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN H. PETTIT.
