BENJAMIN F. WHITE AND SILAS R. OWEN, OF STEWARTSVILLE, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN EARTH-AUGERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,755, dated February 13, 1872.
T0 all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that we, BENJ. F. WHITE and SILAs R. OWEN, of Stewartsville, in the county of DeKalb and State of Missouri, have invented a new and hvaluable Improvement Vin Earth-Angers; and we do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a front view of our invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom view. Fig. 3 is a detached view; Fig. 4, central vertical section of sand-pump connected with our auger.
This invention has relation to earth-boring angers; and consists chie-dy in the construction and arrangement of devices for raising and lowering the air-pipe, and in adapting the auger to sand-boring.
In the accompanying drawing', A represents a strong steel tube, open on one side, and provided with an auger-bit, B, at its lower end. C is a vertical sleeve or tube arranged at one side `of the bit, through one of the wings 'of which it passes. D represents a strong strap securely attached t0 the upper end of the tube A, and provided with a pair of vertically-slotted ears, D', which hold the transverse coupling-pin e of the auger-shaft E, and
is slotted at f, to the upper end of the tube, marked G, which passes through the strap D, thence through the interior of the tube A, and into the sleeve C. The air-tube G is open at its upper end and closed at its lower; but a small aperture, g, is made a short distance from its lower end in one side to serve as an air-outlet.
The vertical motion of the auger-shaft alternately raises and lowers this tube through the medium of the arm F, which is pivoted to a standard, F', on the upper side of a strap D. Every upward motion of the auger-shaft depresses the air-tube and allows the air to escape from the outlet g underneath the bit, thereby assisting the withdrawal of the auger from the well. The alternate sinking movement of the shaft raises the air-tube, inclosing the aperture q within the sleeve C, and thus prevents the earth from Vgetting into and hindering the operation of the tubes.
I indicates a link, which depends from the pin' e, and is coupled to the end of a bell-crank or elbow-lever, I'. The latter is pivoted to one side of the strap D, and is furnished on its outer end with a cutting-tool, J. The pressure of the auger-shaft operates the lever I', and causes the cutting-tool to swing out and cut away the bore of the well all around, and
vvalves, n, with a loop, n', to prevent their overlapping. This bucket is designed for usein connection with the tube G and operating devices, and in lieu of the tubeA and auger-bit. Its use is confined to sand working or other soft material of a similar character. A hole is made through one of the valves a, and a socket or sleevefinserted to hold the end of the air-pipe.
We claim as our inventionl. In an earth-auger or sand-bucket, the automatic air-tube G, operated by the vertical play of the shaft E, substantially as specified.
2. The combination with a well-auger or sand-bucket, of the strap D provided with the slotted ears D', the arm' F, air-pipe G,`and shaft F, substantially as specied. v
3. The combination, with a well-auger having the vertically-movable shaft E, of the link I, bell-crank I', and the projecting and retracting tool J, substantially as specified.
In testimony that we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
