E. M. WESTHAVER. EMBROIDERY HOOP. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 15. l9l6.
Patented Apr. 3, 1917.
L2QL123...
EMBROIDERY-HOOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 3, 1911?.
Application filed. June 15, 1916. Serial No. 103,777.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EVELYN M. Wns'r- HAVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Embroidery-Hoops, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a hoop to be used for stretching and holding material for needle work and the like, more particularly for embroidery work, and the objects of my invention are: first, to provide a hoop of this class in which one of the members is elastic throughout its full length and is required to be stretched over the other member which is non-elastic, thus providing a tight fit over the whole periphery of the hoop; second, to provide such an elastic member COHSlSting of a plurality of pieces of rubber so that a portion will not stretch so as to have weak places in the hoop; third, to provide a hoop of this class in which the elastic member fits snugly in a concave groove in the other member so that it will hold very light material as well as heavy material; fourth, to provide means for readily mounting the clastic member in position on the other hoop member and for removing the same; fifth, to provide a hoop of this class in which the elastic member is provided with a soft covering so that very fine or delicate material will not be injured in its use, and sixth, to provide a device of this class which issimple and economical of construction, durable, easy to operate and will not readily deteriorate or get out of order.
With these and other objects in view as will appear hereinafter. my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this specification, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my hoop complete. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a fragmentary portion of the non-elastic member of my hoop. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the elastic element of my hoop. Fig. 4: is a sectional view through AB of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a sectional view through OD of Fig. 3, and Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view of a fragmentary portion of the elastic member at the joint.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The rigid member 1,elastic members 2, COVGIiIlg 8, connection 4:, connection covering 5 andrings 6 constitute the principal parts of my embroidery hoop.
The hoop 1 is of circular form and sufficiently rigid to retain its position and its outer surface is concave and its inner surface convex forming a concave groove into which fits snugly the elastic member which consists of thecovering 3 and a plurality ofrubber bands 2. These rubber bands and covering are secured together at their ends by means of theconnection 4; which is a metallic piece with the ends swaged inwardly against thecovering 3 and inside these swaged ends are therings 6 which fit tightly around the ends of therubber bands 2 for connecting them together. Over thismetallic piece 4 and secured to thecovering 3 is acovering 5 which is provided with eX-tended ends 5 adapted for a hand hold for placing the elastic portion of the hoop in the groove and for removing the same.
Though I have shown and described a particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts I do not wish to be limited to this particular construction, combination and arrangement but desire to include in the purview of my invention the construction, combination and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claim.
It is obvious that with this construction there is provided a hoop to be used for embroidery and other purposes which combines a rigid hoop member with a concave groove in the outer surface and an elastic member provided with an elastic covering adapted to fit snugly into the groove in said rigid hoop when stretched over the same, that the elastic el'ement consisting of a plurality of rubber bands provides a means for making a tight fit and with proper pressure on the various portions of the hoop and provides for reserve in case some of the elastic bands should become ruptured or weakened, that the covering 4: provides means to facilitate the ready placing and removing of the elastic member from the rigid hoop member, that the device as a whole is simple and economical of construction, durable, easy to operate and will not readily deteriorate and get out of order.
Havingthus described my invention What- I clalm as new and desire to secure by Let.- ters Patent, is:
In a device of the class described, a rigid hoop member With a concave groove in its outer surface, an elastic member composed of a plurality of rubber bands in circular form adapted to fit snugly in the groove in c said rigid hoop, an elastic fabric covering for said rubber bands, means for connecting the ends of said rubber bands and said covering together and means for covering said connecting means provided with extended ends adapted to facilitate the removal of said elastic member from said rigid hoop member.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at San Diego, day of June 1916.
EVELYN M. lVESTI-IAVER.
