IMPROVEMENT IN HALTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,704, dated December 12, 1871.
To alt whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JUNIUs CARPENTER, of Wilmington, in the county of Clinton and State of Ohio, have invented certain Improvements in Halters, of which the following is a specification:
In the drawing, Figure l is a perspective view of halter complete. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are detailed views of the halter-buckles.
This invention has relation to halters 5 and the novelty consists in the construction of the blickles and the arrangement of the straps, the object being to provide an adjustable halter which may be adapted easily to the heads otl different horses, and which is pnt together Without stitching or riveting, all as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents the check-straps, attached. to buckles B and C. D represents the crown piece, and D1 the throat piece, both continuations of a single strap passed through the rings of buckles B. E represents the strap which encircles the nose and chin, and which is attached ou either side to the buckle C. F indicates a bitching-strap looped over the piece D1 and passed through a buckle, G, which slides along' the strap E. The buckle B consists of a square part, b, and a circular part, b1, each traversed by a dat depressed plate, b2 b3, respectively, with open spaces above and below them for the straps-to be put through. c represents short studs projecting from the centers ofthe plates b2 bi to hold the straps, which are perforated to tit said studs at intervals so as to be adjustable. The circular or ring part of the buckle B is designed to let the strap D D1 pass from the crown around under the throat, so that a single strap shall answer the purpose of the two used on the ordinary halter. The strap D D1 is provided with an ordinary buckle, D2, so that it may be shortened for adjustment. The plate b3 should be made semicircular at its lower edge, so as to leave sufficient space for the strap D Dl to be bent to its proper position .without being too loose for comfort or security. To E the lower or square part b of the buckle B is attached the upper end of the cheekstrap, as shown in the drawing, Fig. l. The buckle C to which is attached the lower end of the cheek-strap, and through which passes the nose and chin-strap, consists of two rectangular or square frames, b4 b5. The frame b5 has a dat plate, c1, from which projects a stud, c2, and on either side ot' which is a space to let the nose and chin strap pass through. The frame bJX has a wide bar or plate, c, from which projects a stud, c4, and below said plate a bar, d. The cheek-strap passes through the upper space in the frame b4, over the plate c3, down through second space, behind bar d', thence out through third space, and over plate c1, where it is either attached to the stud c2 or is split to fit on each side of it. The nose. and chin strap is placed over the end ot' the cheek-strap, and is secured by the stud c2. The nose and chin strap is adjustable with reference to the buckle C, and has au ordinary buckle, D3, by means of which its length may be varied. G represents a rectangular-framed buckle, constructed with a tlat plate, f, from the t'ront of which projects a stud, g, and from the back ot' which projectsaloop, g. The latter slides over the nose and chin strap, and allo ws the buckle to be easily moved along. The buckle is designed to hold the. hitching-strap F, which is looped over the throat piece, and is adjustable. The tlat plates in the several buckles should be somewhat depressed, so that the straps may iit them closely.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The improved halter, having the continuous adjustable crown and throat strap D D, buckles B with square part b and ring part b1, buckles C composed ofthe parts b4 b5, cheek-straps A, and continuous nose and chin strap E, all arranged as described.
2. The improved halter-buckle B, having the ring part b1, and cheek-piece holder bhaving the plates b2 b3 with studs 0 as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The buckle G, having the plate f, stud g, and loop g', as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The improved halter-buckle C, constructed with the united frames b4 b5, plates c1 o3, studs c2 c4, and bar d, all arranged as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JUNIUS CARPENTER.
