of ssouri, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Registering Wire- Stretchers; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to a registering wire stretcher. V

An object of the invention resides in the provision of 'an improved device of this character by means of which the wires of a fence may be stretched.

.A further object of the invention resides in soconstructing the device that the wires of the .fence'may be'stretched by the same force and so that that force will be indicated to the operator.

A further object 7 in so constructin the device that thewires of the fence ma be stretched conveniently by one operator.

With these and other objects in view, such as will-appear as my description progresses, my invention comprises the combination and arrangement of partsv as set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim. Y p

The emodiment of the invention. illustrated in the drawing includes a tubular 1 casing 1 which is open at one end andis with a pair of guide arms 2 which provided carry aguide eye 3. Extending transversely or the casing 1 withinthe same is a bar A to which one end of a helical spring 5 is attached, which spring extends longltudinally of the casing and is provided on the other end with a pointer '6 which extends through a slot 7 in the casing and cooperates with a series of numbers 8 to indicate the force, in

Achain 11 is secured to thisrod 9 and 18 provided with awire engaging hook 12 for attachment to the wire which is to be stretched.

Extending transversely of the casing within the same and parallel to thebar 4 is ashaft 13 on which a drum 14: is secured.

A flexible attachingmember 15 is secured to and windable on this drum and extends through the guide eye?! for attachment to a permanent member such as a tree or a post. Aratchet 16 is secured to thisshaft 13 and coiiperates with a" pawl 17 to prevent the movement of the shaft in one direction. The shaft is provided with acrank handle 18 by means of which it may be cranked.

. In operation themember 15 is attached to a tree or post and themember 12 to the wire which is to be stretched. As thehandle 18 is turned themember 15 will be wound upon thedrum 14 so that the wire will be stretched. As the wire is stretched thepointer 6 will move from one to the other of series of numbers 8 so asto indicatethe force in pounds which is exerted upon the wire tostretch the same. It is obvious that this presence of the pawl and ratchet on the winding drum shaft will permit the operator to release thehandle 18 while he reads ,has merely been for the sake of convenience and I do not wish to be limited to that particular embodiment as it is obvious that numerous changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention or exceeding the scope of the appended claim;
