CARPRNTERS SQUARE.
the following to be a full, clear, and-exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it make and use the same.
appertains to relates to carpenters This invention squares.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of a carpenters square embodying an improved construction whereby the cuts and lengths of the various types of rafters may be quickly and easily determined without resorting to any complicated mathematical computation.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a carpenters square constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2, a view similar to Fig. 1 looking at the opposite side of the square and with the setting` arm in an adjusted position, part of the arm being broken away; Fig. 3, a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. l, a section on theline 4--4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5, a partial longitudinal section of the square, and Fig. 6, a section on the line 6-6 of Fig. f
Referring to the drawings the improved square is shown as comprising ablade 10 and atongue 11. Theblade 10 is provided along its outer and inner edges withinch graduations 12, while thetongue 11 is provided along its outer edge withinch graduations 13. Theblade 10 is provided with arecess 14 in which is mounted a longitudinallyadjustable section 15, which section is also suitably graduated as at 16. Thetongue 11 is provided in its outer edge with agroove 17 in which is adapted to seat apivoted extension 18, the pivot of said eX- tension being disposed at the junction of i speciiication of Letters raient. Application meal June 21, 1915. serial No. 35,379.

the blade and tongue and when saidezrtension is moved to its limit away from thetongue 11 the outeredge thereofy registerswith the outer edge ofthev blade and the outer edge ofthesection 15. Formed integral lwith thetongue 11 on the inner edge thereof is aquadrant 19 which is adapted to .be embraced by thearms 20 of -a forked set.-lting member 21, said arms being pivotally connected to the square adjacent the junction of the inner edges of the blade and tongue. Thequadrant 19 has one face provided with graduations 22 indicating the pitches of Octagon hip and valley rafters, graduations andscales 23 indicating the lengths of octagon hip and valley rafters, graduations 24: indicating the pitches of ordinary hip and valley rafters, andgraduations 25 indicating the lengths of ordinary hip and valley rafters. The setting member carriesindicators 26 through the medium of which thegraduations 23 and 25 may be readily read by bringing a given edge of said indicators into registration withrespective graduations 23 and 25.tions 22 and 24 are read along the edge of the armv20 which carries theindicators 26. rlhe other face of thequadrant 19 is provided with graduations 27 indicating the lengths of common rafters andgraduations 28 indicating the pitches of common rafters. By setting themember 21 to a desired graduation and taking the cut along the outer edge of the tongue or the outer edge of'the blade while themember 21 bears against the edge of the timber the desired result can be reached. Vhether the cut be The graduaj taken along the edge of the tongue or the..
outer edge of the blade depends on the particularproblem in hand and will be apparent to those skilled in the art.
In order to .lock themember 21 in a desired adjustment for solving a given problem there is mounted in the curved edge of the `quadrant 19 aplate 29 provided withnotches 30. Mounted on themember 21 is a pivotedlatch 31 movable transversely of the member and normally held in position to engage in a desirednotch 30 by aspring 32. This latch is provided with anotch 33 adapted to register with theplate 29 when thelatch 31 is moved to a predetermined position against the influence of thespring 32. Vhen thisnotch 33 registers with theplate 29 it will be obvious that themember 21 can be adjusted freely on its pivot. Slidably mounted in the member 2l is apush pin 34 which is operatively connected to the latch 3l. By forcing thispin 34 inwardly the latch 3l can be moved against the influence of thespring 32 to register thenotch 33 with theplate 29 and permit free adjustment of themember 21.
When thenotch 33 is out of the plane of theplate 29 it will Ybe obvious that a portion of the latch 3l will be disposed in a givennotch 30 and thereby lock the member 2l against pivotal movement.
' What is claimed is A carpenters square comprising a blade and tongue, a. quadrant carried by the tongue on the inner edge thereof, a notched plate mounted in the curved edge of the quadrant, a forkedsetting arm pivoted to the square and embracing the quadrant, and
a pivot latch mounted on the setting arm EPHRAIM LAAKKONEN.
