Description

UNITED STATES HENRY O. GRUBE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN COVERINGS OR HIDES FOR TOY-ANIMALS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,853, dated September 12, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY G. GRUBE, of New York city, State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Artificial Hides or (loverin gs for Animal-Toys, of which the following is a specification The object of my invention relates to a new material for covering animal-toys which shall do away with all the present experienced objections. Animal-toys, especially rocking-horses, are at present covered with natural hides, which in many respects are objectionable, being expensive and liable to be influenced by insects, to rot, give out a bad smell, lose the hair, See. In order to overcome these difficulties I have invented the artificial hide, and have, through a series of experiments and actual tests, found that this in all respects does away with all the objections experienced in covering such toys with natural hides.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to prepare my artificial hide, I shall proceed to describe my mode of manufacturing the same.
I take a common strong packing-paper and cover the same with a thin layer of sizing, manufactured of copal varnish, resin, linseed-oil, and chalk, which I apply in a heated state, with the aid of a brush, to the paper. Before the same dries I take flock, prepared out of wool, and apply the same, simply with aid of asieve or collander, to the sized paper. After it is dry the flock which did not adhere to the paper is removed. By mixing the flock and the sizing with difi'erent dry colors, as desired, I obtain all re quired coloring of my artificial hide. By the aid of a sponge and tuk or stain I obtain all desired shades and varieties of colors.
After my artificial hide is manufactured I cut it to any desired form, make it damp, apply common glue to the back of it, and thereby fasten it to the article I wish to cover with it.
My artificial hide being cheaper than common paint, with which often such articles are covered, whereby a kind of artificial hide is obtained, is very much superior thereto.
If the wood is not well seasoned it will sometimes crack and thereby spoil the appearance of the covering. This is prevented by my invention, as the paper is elastic enough not to break where the wood cracks.
I claim as my invention- The mode of manufacturing, applying, and using the artificial hide as cover for animal-toys, as hereinbefore described, and for the purposes set forth and specified.
HENRY O. GRUBE.
