BODY OF MOTOR-VEHICLES.
Application filed Uctober 30, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that Lllnnnr Tnissninna citizen of the Republic of. France, residing in Paris. France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bodies of Motor-Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention isto provide a motor vehicle body which can be closed and opened easily and rapidly, and which, as a distinctive feature, can be completely inclosed on its sides by an improved arrangement of window sashes.
Contrary to the usual custom. the windows according to, this invention do not all descend into compartments provided below them, neither are they merely detachable and kept separate in independent casings.
The following description in regard to the accompanying drawing, given by way of example, will explain the characteristics and advantages of this invention. 7
Figure 1 represents a large torpedo shape model cover. Figs. 2, 3 a1 1d 4 are respec tively. diagrammatic sections on V V, X X
and Y Y of Fig. 1. Figs. 5 and (S are drawn to enlarged scale and are an elevation and vertical section on U U, Fig. of a pair of. sliding sashes. Fig. 7 is a modified arrangement applied to a small size body, and Fig. 8 is a diagrammatic section on Z of Fig. 7.
In the case of bodies that are long and of a size to allow of emergency seats facing forward, the body is constructed with side housings or casings A for the reception of the window sashes when the body is open or merely closed on top by a hood. The pair of sliding sashes represented in part in Figs. 5 and 6 are constructed of metal, or of wood andmeta-l, or other suitable material. They comprise upper and lower members 0 each of double U Shape. In one pair of the U recesses. is fixed a sash frame a containing a window Z), and in the other pair of U grooves is a sash frame e that can be slid in a way to permit the displacement of its window f from in front of the pane 7) as indicated in broken lines, Fig. 5. This displacement is limited by a projection orstop 9 which prevents the frame sliding completely out of its guides. The pairs of sashes being in their casings A and the hoodopened out. the operation of closing in the latter is effected on each side thus:Each pair of sashes is raised vertically out of its casing Specification of Letters Patent.

by any suitable means, as for instance by strap C, being guided in a groove piece I). either fixed to the hood supportz' or formed on it. This groove is gradually widened at its lower part in known manner, so as to permit the lower member 0 when pulled right up to be pushed outwardly so that the projection j thereof may be lifted on to the projection on the casing A so as to retain the member 0 in raised position. The raised sash frame may at the top engage with. a channel shaped member I which may be of a length equal to that of the frame and be provided with a clamping screw or other equivalent device. The members 0 being thus fixed, the sliding sash c with its window f can be drawn sidewise above the door D. The front upright of the sash frame 6 engages in a groove n fixed to the front screen 0. Clamping screws or catches 7? keep it in position. The sides of the body between the first rib of the roof and the front screen is thus closed in. The windows Z) and f when in their raised positions engage with their upper edge under the top of the hood which prevents water entering. The rear side portions of the body be tween the first and second uprights for the roof is closed in in the same manner as the front part. The roof part may be of any construction, provided that the sliding windows can be made use of and be retained in raised position.
In the small type of body shown in Fig. 7, the arrangement difi'ers from the preceding only as regards the rear portion. The front portion between the front screen and the first roof upright is closed in as in Fig. 1. In the rear portion behind the drivers seat is arranged a casing g which stretches across the whole vacant width of the body. In this casing are two windows 1* fixed in rising and falling sash frames 8, each occupying half of thecasing 9.
To close the side part above the back door D, a window 7, indicated in broken lines in Fig. 8, is raised while being guided from the casing I to swinging holder u which is hinged to the roof support 2' by hinge a". lVhen the window 7 has been raised completely out of its casing, it is then clamped in holder '11 by screw y, whereupon the latter may be turned on its hinge :r so as to bring the sash over door D so that it occupies the position shown in full lines in Fig. 8, and can be fixed against a vertical strip 0 attached to the back roof support o, by a pivoted latch 2 and screw or other suitable retaining means. As the sash 8 may have a length equal to half thecrosscasing 9 it can be adapted to shut a bay in the side of the body greater than the usual width of the door, as shown in Fig. 7.
Having thus described my invention and the. best means I know of carrying the same into practical effect, I claimz 1. A motor vehicle body having a'lateral casing adjacent to each doorway for the reception of a frame, a frame adapted to receive a pair of windows and to. be lowered into said casing V and raised therefrom. whereby said windows may be raised and lowered together,; one of said Windows adapted to be drawn aside to'lclose an adjacent opening upon said frame being raised 9 and adapted to receive the windowwvhen' the latter is raised out of said casing, and
means for securing the window in said, holder adapted to release the window therefrom when desired, said'holder adapted to be turned so as to cause the window to occupy a position inthe side of the body rest-- mg against another roof support and re training devices for securing said window in saidsnle position.
a. A "vehicle bony, having a casing for Witnesses j the reception'of a frame, a frame adapted tocontain a plurality of windows and having upper and lower grooves to permit a window to be slid into or out of the frame, and means for lowering said f 'arne into said 0:13-- ing and raising the same therefrom.
4. A motorvehicle body having a lateral casing adjacen'tto each doorway for the reception of a frame, a frame adapted to re ceive a pair of windows and to be lowered into said casing and raised therefrom,
whereby said windowsmay' be raised and lowered together, one of said windows adapted to be drawn aside to close an adja cent opening-upon said'framebeing raised: 3
out of said casing, the said windows being" retained within grooves or guideways attached to the supports of the roof or front screen ofthe vehicle by clamping ior latching devices, andflsaid motor vehicle body having means for closing the rear side portions of the body consisting of ajcasing arranged trensversely of the vehicle behind the drivers seat, a window normally disposed in said casing, a holder pivotally secured to the roof support and adapted to re ceive the window when the; latter is raised out of-said casing, said holder adapted to be turned so as to cause "the window "to occupy a position in the side of the body resting againstanother roof's'upport and retaining devices for securing said last mentioned window'in positions 7 In w tness whereof, I nave hereunto I signed-sinyname in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. j i
