Continuation in part of application Serial No. 850,938, filed. tepteniber 23, lei l. This applicat '1 Serial No. 825,635.
March 18, 1914.
To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, I'IARRY A. VVARDY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Kalamazoo and State of lriichigan, haveinvented a new and useful Filing Device, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to filing devices, and more particularly to index clips adapted to be engaged for the selective removal of folders, sheets or cards to which the clip is applied, from the cabinet or other container in which they may be filed.
In my companion application Serial No. 650,936, I have illustrated a series of clips capable of adjustment in connection with folders, sheets or cards, and each comprising a section of sheet metal folded to provide a front clamping leaf or leg and a rear clamping leaf or leg having their free ends pressing together, and provided with an engageable extension projecting from the folded edge of the clip and also provided with a sight opening in the front leaf or leg through which the index characters on the folders, sheets or cards are visible. To this extent the subject matter of the present application is disclosed in my said application Serial No. 650,936, and to the same extent the present application is a continuation of my said prior application.
An object of the present invention is to provide a clip for the purpose mentioned, which is adapted to be applied to allforms of folders, sheets or cards and which will be firmly held in place after being applied. The clip is preferably constructed so as to render visible the index character on the folder, sheet or card, adjacent to which in dex character the clip is originally adjusted. The clip is also so constructed that it may be applied and removed with facility.
Other obvious advantages resulting from my improved form of clip will be readily apparent from the following detail description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a perspective view of my in1- proved clip applied to a folder. Fig. 2 is the blank from which the clip is formed. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the clip applied to a folder. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view on the line 41% of Fig. 8. Fig. 5 is an edge view of clip illustrating the manner of its application.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented 3, 1936 The clip illustrated is formed from a sectionof sheet metal folded upon a line intermediate of its ends to provide a. front clamping leaf orleg 1 and a rear clamping leaf orleg 2. A projectingportion 3, preferably in the form of a hook, is stamped out of the leaf orleg 1 and when the latter is folded upon the leaf orleg 2 to form the clip the hook projects beyond the folded edge of said leaves or legs. The leaf orleg 1 is formed with an up-turned lip at the free edge of said leaf or leg and which may be engaged, as illustrated in Fig. 5, for the purpose of applying the clip to a folder, sheet or card or removing it therefrom. In the embodiment shown the leaf orleg 2 is provided with a number of perforations 5 and the leaf orleg 1 is provided with a number ofperforations 6 which are somewhat larger than the perforations 5, and the edges of which are provided with inwardly depressed tongues orteeth 7 adapted to engage with the folder, sheet or card to which the clip is applied. The perforations 5 are for the purpose of receiving the extremities of the tongues orteeth 7. The portion of the leaf orleg 1 from which thehoolt 3 is stamped is slightly enlarged to provide sight opening 8 through which the index characters on the folder, sheet or card will be visible when the clip is applied thereto.
The preferred and most convenient method of applying the clip to a folder, sheet or card is to place the slip between the index and fore finger and to slightly raise theleaf 1 with the thumb and insert the folde sheet or card between the leaves of the hook while the fingers rest on the shoulders at the base of the hook portion. While the leaves of the clip are thus held separated in this manner, the clip may be conveniently adjusted so that the index characters on the folder, sheet or card will center in theopening 8, when the pressure of the thumb may be released and the outer ends of the leaves of the clip may be given a slight pressure until the tongues or teeth engage in the folder, sheet or card upon which the clip is applied. it will be observed that when placed on a folder the body portion of the hook forms a clasp which serves to bind the leaves of the folder together thus preventing the displacement of the contents of the folder.
The utility of the device is clearly disclosed in my companion application N0.
650,936 above referred to and it is not deemed necessary to go into further detail with respect to the manner in which .the hook portion of the clip may be selectively engaged for the removal of certain folders,
sheets or cards which may be arranged in a cabinet or other suitable container.
It is readily apparent that a clip of this character may be manufactured with extreme economy; that it may be applied and removed with great facility and that when applied by reason of the gripping action of the two leaves of the clip supplemented by the gripping action of the tongues orteeth 7, the clip will be firmly held in proper adjustment and from accidental displacement until removedby separating the leaves of the clip, substantially in the manner heretofore described in the suggestion of the preferred manner of the application of the clip to the folders, sheets or cards with which it is used.
I am aware that slight modifications in details of the construction may be made without departure from the spirit and scope of the invention.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A clip adapted to engage a flat sheet, comprising a body portion composed of two clamping leaves, a hook portion stamped from one of said leaves projecting from said body portion, said leaves being adapted to receive and hold between their inner surface the sheet, a portion of said sheet being visible through the opening from which said hook portion is out, substantially as specified.
2. A device adapted to constitute a clasp for a folder, comprising a body portion composed of two clamping leaves, a projecting portion stamped from one of said leaves, said leaves being adapted to receive and hold between their inner surface the folder, a portion of said folder being visible through the opening from which said projection is cut, substantially as specified.
3. A clip for indexing or withdrawing cards and folders, comprising a rear clamping leaf, a front clamping leaf integral with said rear clamping leaf and having its free end pressing toward said rear clamping leaf and having a sight opening, and an engageable hook extending from said leaves, substantially as described. i
4. A device adapted to be applied to a folder, sheet or card, comprising a sheet bent to form two clamping leaves, and a projecting portion stamped from one of said leaves, said leaves being adapted to receive and hold between their inner surface the object to which it is applied, a portion of said obj ect being visible through said openin from which said projection is cut, substantially as specified.
A device adapted to constitutea clip for a folder, comprising a body portion composed of two clamping leaves, a projection stamped from one of said leaves, and a lip formed at the free end of one of said leaves for manual engagement whereby said leaves may be separated in applyingand removing said clip, substantially as specified.
6. A marker or clip comprising a resilient metal plate doubled upon itself to form a front leg and a rear leg and having a sight opening in one of said legs, a guiding flange at the edge of one of said legs, and a tooth on one of said legs extending toward the other leg to engage with any sheet or folder interposed between said legs, substantially as described. q
7. A marker or clip comprising a resilient metal plate doubled upon itself to present a front leg and a rear leg and having a sight opening in said front leg, an upturned lip on said front leg flaring away from the rear leg, a tooth on one of said legs extending toward the other leg, and an engageable projection extending from said plate, substantially as described.
8. In a filing cabinet,.a device of the character described composed of two clamping leaves adapted to receive and hold a folder therebetween and a projecting portion stamped from one of said leaves, a portion of the folder being visible through the opening from which said projection is cut.
In witness whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
