INHALER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 5, 1915.
Application filed. February 5, 1914. Serial No. 816,817.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES C. F. NIE- SCHANG, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Fort Wayne, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inhalers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in inhalers and is especially intended to be worn by the patient while sleeping.
The object of the improvements is to construct the device so that it may be held in proper position for use without inconvenience or discomfort to the patient and with but little liability of becoming dislodged.
Another object is to construct the device so that it may be adjusted readily to fit the nostrils of the patient; and a further object is to provide a construction that admits of being easily charged with the aromatic or medicinal substance to be inhaled.
The objects of the improvements are accomplished by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which 2- Figure l is a side elevation showing the apparatus applied in position upon a patient; Fig. 2 is a front view of the apparatus; and Fig. 3 is a top view of the same.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views and referring now to the same, (A) is a receptacle so shaped that its rear side will approximately conform with the contour of the forehead of the patient and is provided at its front with an aperture (B) through which the receptacle may be charged with a transient substance (C), such as cotton, and through which the transient material may be saturated with the aromatic or medicament to be used. The receptacle is held in position upon the forehead by means of a band (D) that passes around the head of the patient and is connected at its ends by means of suitable couplings (E) with buttonheaded studs (F) that project from the receptacle at the ends thereof.
From the lower end of the receptacle extends a tube (G) that communicates therewith, and a manifold (H) is connected at the lower end of the tube. A pair of nasal tubes (J) are connected with the manifold and are adapted to be turned at their respective connections therewith so that their enlarged ends (K) may be adjustably spaced apart to suit the openings of the nostrils.
Upon the tube (G) is asliding block (L) having a setscrew (M) for securing it in adjusted positions upon the tube, and se cured at the back of the block is a saddle (N) adapted to fit and rest upon the bridge of the nose.
In using the device the receptacle is first filled with absorbent material such as cotton through the aperture (B), and a proper quantity of the aromatic or medical substance to be inhaled is invested in the cotton.
When thus charged the apparatus is placedinto position with the receptacle held upon the forehead by means of the band and with the enlarged ends of the nasal tubes extending into the nostrils so that as respiration takes place the vapor, generated by the passage of air through the saturated cotton, will be carried into the respiratory organs of the system. The aperture (B) is so located and proportioned that the patient may readily manipulate the saturated cotton by shifting it from one position to another within the chamber or by compressing it by introducing his finger through the opening so that the quantity of vapor inhaled may be varied.
By adjusting the block (L) the saddle may be shifted upon the nose to such position as affords the greatest comfort.
lVhat I claim is A device of the class described comprising a receptacle having a charge opening therein and also a pendent tube communicating therewith; a pair of adjustable nasal tubes arranged in connection with the lower end of said tube; and a saddle having adjustable connection with the pendent tube.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES C. F. NIESCHANG.
