' INSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Rutherford, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Syringes. of which the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription.
The object of the @inventionis to provide certain new and useful improvements in syringes and like devices whereby the plunger is held against accidental dropping out of the barrel when pointing the nozzle upward.
In order to accomplish the desired result, use is made of a clip adapted to engage the barrel and aspring arm extending from the said clip and ranging lengthwise of the syringe, the arm extending beyond the rear end of the clip and being bent inward so that its free end bears against the outside'of the plunger of the syringe to hold the said plunger against accidental movement in the barrel.
A practical embodiment of theflinvention is represented in they accompanyi-rigdrawings forming a part of this specification, in
which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views Figure 1 is a side elevation of a syringe provided with the combined finger piece and retaining device; Fig. 2 is a cross section of the same on the line 2-2 of Fig. 3; Fig. 3 1s a sectional side elevation of the combined finger piece and retaining device in position on the syringe; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the finger pieceand the retaining device; Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a syringe provided with a modified form of the finger piece and retaining device; Fig. 6 is a plan view of the combined finger piece and retaining device; and Fig. 7 is a sectional side elevation of the same.
In syringes, especially those made of glass, as now generally constructed the plunger is liable to drop out of the barrel when pointing the nozzle thereof in an upward direction, and hence the plunger is liable to be broken, injured or soiled, so as to render the syringe unfit for use. In order to prevent the plunger from accidentally dropping out of the barrel, use is made of a clip engaging the barrel and a plunger retaining device. held on the clip and adapted to engage the plunger with sufiicient force to hold the plunger against accidental movement but to allow the user to reciprocate the-plunger in the barrel for drawing in liquid or forcing it out in the usual manner.
The syringe on which the device is applied consists of the usual barrel A, terminating at its outer end in a nozzle A and provided at its innerend with an exterior collar A. In the barrel A reciprocates a plunger B provided at its outer end with a suitable handle B, to permit the user to conveniently reciprocate the plunger in the barrel A for drawing in or ejectmg liquid in the usual manner. Aring C fits exteriorly on the barrel A and abuts against the collar A, and the said ring C is provided at opposite sides with fingerpieces D, D extendin outwardly in opposite directions to permit the user to' take hold of the finger pieces with the fore and middle fingers at the time of pressing the plunger B inward with the thumb for ejecting the liquid from the bar-' rel in the us'ualmanner. To the ring C is secured aclip in the form of a narrow ring E provided with a number of prongs E engaging the exterior surface of the barrel A so as to hold the ring C andwith it the finger-pieces D, D in position on the barrel. One of the prongs E is provided with a spring arm F which extends rearwardly 'through'a guideway G in the form of-a slot formed in the rings E and C and in the finger 'piece D. The free end F of the 'spring F projects a distance beyond the collar A and is bent inwardly to bear against the exterior surface of the plunger B with sufficient force to hold the plunger Ba ainst accidental .movement in the barrel It will be noticed that by the arrangement described a comparatively long spring arm F is provided to furnish the resiliency required tohold the plunger B against accidental movement in the barrel A. ,By passing the spring arm F through the guideway G, the spring arm is.,.protected against accidental injury when using the device, as above explained, as the spring arm readily'yields when passing over the collar A"'tat the time f .placing the device in position on ,the

and 'Z the ring C is provided with the finger collar A, and the free end F of this spring arm F is bent inwardly and bears against the exterior surface of the plunger B to hold the latter against accidental movement in the barrel A.
Having thus described my invention, it claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent: p
1. A syringe attachment, comprising a ring adapted to engage the barrel of a syringe at the rear end and rovidedwith a member extending lengthwise of the barrel, and a spring arm extending from the extremity of said member and ranging lengthwise of the syringe, the arm extending back to and beyond the ring and the free end of the arm being adapted to bear against the outside of the syringe plunger tohold the latter against accidental movement in the barrel.
2.- A syringe attachment, comprising a ring provided with finger pieces and adapted to encircle the barrel, the ring being adapted to abut against the collar on the rear end of the barrel, a clip member extending from the said ring lengthwise of the barrel and hearing on the exterior of the barrel, and a spring arm integral at one end with the extrity of said clip member and extendin. back to and beyond the ring, the free end ot the said arm extending inwardly and being adapted to bear against the outside of the syringe plunger. 3. A syringe attachment, comprising a ring provided with finger pieces and adapted to encircle the barrel, the ring being adapted to abut against the collar on the rear end of the barrel, a clip member extending from the said ring lengthwise of the barrel and hearing on the exterior of the barrel, and a spring arm integral at one end with the said clip member and extending back to and beyond the ring, the said ring and one of the said finger pieces being providedwith a guideway for the said arm, the free end of the arm extending back toand beyond the ring and being bent inward to bear exteriorly on the syringe plunger.
