G. A. ZAPP. INHALING SYSTEM.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 10, 1914.

GUSTAVE A. ZAPF, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
INHALING SYSTEM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 23, 1915.
Application filed July 10, 1914. Serial No. 850,069.
To all wko-hiit'may concern;
Be it known that I, GUSTAVE A. ZAPF, a
citizen of Austria, residing in New York In the accompanying drawing which a diagrammatic elevation of an inhaling system embodying my invention, thenumeral 1 indicates a heating or cooling chest containing apipe coil 2 that communicates throughinlet pipe 3 with the atmospheric air, the drawing showing said pipe passing from the interior of a room through a window pane 4 into the open air.Coil 2 is further connected through pipe 5 with anair distributing chamber 6 which is provided with athermometer 7.Chamber 6 is furnished with a plurality ofnipples 8 by means of which connections may be made between said chamber and a number of different rooms, floors or apartments, said nipples being adapted to be coupled toair supply pipes 9. Eachpipe 9 extends along thefloor 10 of a room and is here provided with a plurality ofnipples 11, with which the inlet ports of the severalinhaling appliances 12 may be connected byflexible tubes 13. For collecting the exhaled foul air and discharging the same into the open air, anair outlet pipe 14 is provided. The latter is furnished with a plurality ofnipples 15 to whichexhaust pipes 16 extending along the ceilings of the various rooms may be connected. Eachexhaust pipe 16 is in turn provided withnipples 17 to which the outlet ports of the inhaling appliances may be connected byflexible tubes 18. Theoutlet pipe 14 is of a larger diameter than theair intake pipe 3 and'extends vertically beyond the same so as to induce a natural draft within the several conduits of the inhaling system for removing the foul air therefrom.
If cool air is required for breathing purposes, cold air may be admitted intochest 1 through apipe 19, or ice may be packed aroundcoil 2. If on the other hand, hot air is required, steam or another heating medium is admitted into the chest through apipe 20. l
The inhaling appliances proper may be of any suitable construction. Thus for instance, the head of a patient lying in bed may be inserted into the lower padded half of abox 21 whereupon thewindowed cover 22 is closed, a rubber packing fitted around the patients neck providing a substantially air tight closure. Instead of this box, amask 23 covering the mouth and nose of a person who has to work in a poisonous or other unhealthy atmosphere may be used.
It will be seen that by the construction described breathing 'air which is heated or cooled to the extent desired, may be passed through any number of appliances by means of which it is applied to patients or workmen operating in toul air. Although the drawing shows my improved inhaling system in conjunction with inhaling appliances for human beings, it is obvious that also similar appliances for supplying breathing air to animals may be connected to said system without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
An inhaling device comprising an air inlet pipe, at temperature regulating device communicating therewith, an air distributing chamber communicating with the'temperature regulating device, an air supply pipe communicating with the distributing chamher and extending along the floor of a. room, anair outlet pipe extending along the ceiling of said ropm, flexible tubes connected to the air supply pipe, additional flexible tubes connected to the air outlet pipe, inhaling appliances interposed between the first named tubes and the last named tubes, and an upright air discharge pipe communicating with the air outlet pipe, said air discharge pipe extending a distance above the air inlet pipe.
GUSTAVE A. ZAPF.
