Application filed June 22, 1914.
1/ h (M 20710112. it may concern Be it known that we, ERNEST C. Mnssnn and THEODORE DILGER, citizens of the United States, residing at Bluefield, in the county of Mercer, State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Hand- Reamer, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a hand reamer and more particularly to one which is especially adapted to ream watch bezels.
The invention aims to provide a reamer which is rotated by hand and may be easily and quickly adjusted to thus ream a Watch bezel to the desired size for the reception of a crystal.
A further object is to provide a hand reamer with cutters which may be adjusted during the manual rotation of the reamer.
TNith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings accompanying this specification and forming a part thereof, the preferred embodiment of our invention has been illustrated, in which Figure 1 is a view in elevation of our improved hand reamer, illustrating the same in the act of reaming a watch bezel, the latter being fragmentally depicted. Fig. 2 is a view in longitudinal section of the reamer. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view thereof. Fig. 4% is a cross sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail view in perspective of one of the movable cutters.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, thehandle 7 is enlarged at its lower extremity to form thehead 8.
A central bore 9 extends for a limited distance within the head and communicating with which are the three symmetrically arranged and radially extendingslots 10.
Theslots 10 are adapted to receive thecutters 11 therein and the bore 9 is adapted to receive the expanding member 15 therein. The bore 9 extends a slight distance between Specification of Letters Patent.

the lower level of theslots 10 and communirates with thethreaded bore 18 which extends entirely through the handle orshank 7. The expanding member includes a conical lower portion 14 and an upper cylindrical portion 15, the latter being of such size as to slide within and be guided by the side walls of the bore 9.
Athumb screw 16 threadedly engagesthebore 13 and is provided with the lower restricted portion 17 which contacts with the expanding member and is adapted to move the same in a forced manner. The upper extremity of the thumb screw is provided with theknurled head 18 by means of which the cutters may be adjusted during the manual rotation of the reamer. The three cutters are exactly similar, for which reason, only one will be treated in detail, which as illustrated in Fig. 5, comprises thebody portion 19 and the lower and more restrictedportion 20. The difference in size between theportions 19 and 20 defines two shoulders or ledges 21 by means of which the cutters are held within theslots 10.
Threesegmental plates 23 are rigidly se cured to the cutter head by thescrews 24 or allied means and which plates are spaced a distance apart so as to define threeslots 25 which lie directly above but are more limited in width than theslots 10. Theslots 25 are of such size as to slidably receive theportion 20 of the cutters therein but too restricted to allow theportion 19 of the cutters to pass therethrough. This provides that when the cutters are mounted within the slots and theplates 23 secured to the cutter head, the cutters may move freely longitudinally in the slots but are prevented from moving transversely thereof. The cutters are each provided with thecutting blades 26 rigidly secured thereto, which cutting blades include the serrated orcutting edges 27 The adjacent central portions of thesegmental plates 23 are rounded as at 28, which allows portions of the helical expanding member to pass therethrough but prevents the same from becoming entirely detached from the head. Each of the cutters is provided with thegroove 29 extending along the upper surface, which groove is adapted to receive thecompression spring 30 therein, which spring contacts with therear wall 31 of the groove.
A band orring 32 extends around thehead 8 and fits within the annular groove or ledge 33 so that the outer surfaces of the ring and head will lie substantially in the same plane to thus define a continuous and unbroken surface. Thering 32 includes three upstanding ears 3a which extend in front of the slot as illustrated in Fig. 2 and receive the compression spring thereagainst. This confines the compression spring Within thegroove 29 and asimilar groove 35 which is formed along the bottom Wall of theslots 10. The inner edge of each cutter provided with thebeveled face 22 which receives the conical surface of the expanding member thereagainst and provides for the forced adjustment of the cutters. lhe surface 36 of the handle orshank 7 is serrated or knurled so as to provide a suitable grip, by means of which the reamer may be manually rotated. The head ofthe thumb screw extends upwardly Within the palm of the hand and this provides for either the expansion or retraction of the various cutters, while the rcamer is being rotated. The reamer thus formed is particularly adapted for reaming Watch bezels. It
s has been found in practice that the Watch crystals vary in size, necessitating the reaming of the Watch bezels. This can be quickly and conveniently accomplished With the reamer' as herein described.
Having thus fully described our invention,
' What We claim is A manually operable reamer for Watch bezcls comprising a head, a handle proecting therefrom, a bore extending through 35 head and handle and enlarged for a limited distance Within said head, an expanding member positioned in the enlarged portion of said bore, segmental plates secured to the said head and positioned a dis- 40 tance apart, defining slots, said head provided with slots registering with and slightly larger than the slots defined by said plates, cutters slidably mounted Within and limited to rectilinear motion by said slots, said head and cutters provided with registering grooves, springs positioned Within said grooves adapted to retract said cutters, and a ring frictionally engaging the head and provided with downwardly extending cars Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
