Description

W. S. M. WHITE. GLAMIPING DEVICE FOR TAPPBTS.
Patented Jan. 5, 1915.
WILLIAM S. M. WHITE, 0F LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF TO ROBERT S. CGNNER AND ONE-FOURTH TO B. A. SMITH, BOTH OF LOS ANGELES, CALI- FORNIA.
GLAMPING DEVICE FOR TAPPETS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 5, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. M. VVHiTn, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamping Devices for Tappets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to clamping device for tappets for ore stamping machines and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide reliable and efficient means for preventing the tappet from slipping on the stamp stem.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for firmly clamping a cam tappet to a stamp stem, in which the clamping nut and the lock nut are in position to be readily reached for adjustment.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a cam tappet secured to a portion of the stamp stem, the means for securing the tappet t0 the stem being made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the tappet and the securing means removed from the stem. Fig. 3 is a central, vertical section taken through the tappet and securing means, while the stamp stem is shown in elevation. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 44 of Fig. 3, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 1 designates the stamp stem and 2 is the cam tappet which in general contour is of the usual form. Thetappet 2 is provided with arecess 3 of substantiallv rectangular form, which communicates with the central bore for the stem 1. Agroove 4 is formed near one end of the tappet and a similar groove 5 is formed near the opposite end thereof.
Two clamping rings 6 of substantially identical form surround the stem 1 and fit within the grooves =1 and 5, as shown in Fig. 3. The rings 6 each have an oval aperture therein and a slightly offsetperforated lug 7 to accommodate thebolt 8. As shown, the
rings 6 are disposed to diverge or incline oppositely and the head 9 of thebolt 8 engages thelug 7 of one of the rings. Bearing against the lug of the other ring is ablock washer 10. Fitted to the threaded end of thebolt 8 is an adjusting nut 11 and ajam nut 12. The rings 6 are slightly elongated and the tappet is provided with arib 13 between thegrooves 4 and 5.
\Vhen the parts are assembled as shown in Fig. 3 the tappet is securely held to the stem by turning the adjusting nut 11 against the block washer to clamp the rings obliquely upon the stem. After thenut 10 has been firmly adjusted, thejam nut 12 is turned down against it, thus holding the tappet to the stem, and eliminating the possibility of slipping on the stem. I
From the foregoing it will be obvious that the adjustment of the tappet can be readily accomplished since both the adjusting nut and the jam nut are outside the tappet and in position to be readily reached by a wrench.
My invention is simple in construction, reliable and efficient in use and can be manufactured at low cost.
I claim In a device of the character described, the combination with a rod, a sleeve adjustably mounted on said rod, said sleeve having a longitudinally extending recess and. a longitudinal bore communicating with the recess and a longitudinal rib extending into the recess, of a clamping device comprising a pair of rings having substantially oval apertures therein, said rings having lugs formed thereon, said lugs provided with transverse apertures, a block slidable in the recess in the sleeve and adapted to abut the lug on one of said rings and a bolt adapted to extend through the apertures in the lugs and through the block whereby the rings are held in frictional engagement with the rod.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
l/VILLIAM S. M. WHITE.
