POISON-BOTTLE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM CHAPMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mesaba, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Poison-Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to poison bottles; and it has for its primary object the provision of a stopper therefor and means for mounting the same for unusual withdrawing movements upon the neck of the bottle, so that the user will have his attention directed to the indicating surface of the stopper and thereby necessitate his becoming acquainted with the nature of the bottles contents during the operation of effecting a release of the stopper.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character wherein the stopper may be quickly removed by one acquainted with this construction.
IVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the bottle; Fig. 2 is a vertical section therethrough; Fig. 3 is a similar view, showing the locking member in a partly released position; and Fig. 4; is a section on line l4 of Fig. 3.
Thebottle 1 has itsneck 2 terminating in an upperannular flange 3 whereinvertical grooves 4 are formed at diametrically opposite points the upper ends of the grooves opening directly onto the upper surface of the flange, while the opposite ends of the grooves open directly onto the lowerretaining surface 5.
Thestopper 6 is provided with aplug portion 7 of a configuration conforming with the internal shape of theneck 2 of the bottle, the lower end of the plug being closed as at 8, while the upper end is provided with anannular flange 9 having verticalparallel grooves 10 therein at diametrically opposite points which open through horizontal branches 11 into avertical bore 12 of the stopper. Thebore 12 is cylindrical in transverse section and is designed to receive a correspondingly formed intermediate portion 13 of a vertically movable looking device 14. The device 14 is provided withradial branches 15, which extend from Specification of Letters Patent.

the intermediate portion 13, and as illustrated said branches are designed for vertical movements in the horizontal'branches 11 of thegrooves 10. Thebranches 15 are provided with dependingvertical legs 16 which terminate in inwardly extendinglugs 17. Thelugs 17 are spaced for a distance slightly greater than the diameter of theflange 9 at points in line with or through thegrooves 10, whereby they may be freely moved vertically in the grooves, as will be understood.
The intermediate portion 13 of the securing member has fixed thereto one end of acoiled spring 18, said spring being extended into thebore 12 and having its opposite end seated against the closed end of the bore, whereby the spring normally exerts its force to hold the securing member under tension. In applying the stopper to the bottle neck, the portion 13 of the securing member is depressed manually so as to bring thebranches 15 into the horizontal branches 11 of thegrooves 10. The stopper is then adjusted over the neck of the bottle, so as to bring thelugs 17 into registration with the vertiis then applied to the stopper and to the v securing member until the flange t) of the stopper rests against theflange 3 of the bot tle neck. The stopper is then rotated with a continuous application of pressure of the hand of the operator against the portion 13 of the securing member so as to permit the stopper to be moved with freedom and thelugs 17 of the securing member adjusted to underlie thesurface 5 of theflange 3 at points remote from thegrooves 4. The stop per is then in its applied position and to remove the same from the bottle, the movements hereinbefore described must be reversed until thelugs 17 of the securing member of the stopper are alined with thevertical grooves 4 in the bottle neck. Theflange 9 is provided on its upper surface with indicating matter, such as the words Beware and Poison. WVhile the intertor to the indicating matter on the surface of the stopper, as is obvious. It is desirable that thespring 18 under its force holds thelugs 17 engaged With thesurface 5 With such -friction that the operation of revolving the plug Without simultaneously depressing the portion 13 of the securing member is rendered extremely diiilcult it not impossible.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection With the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention Will be readily understood Without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is A poison bottle having its neck provided With an annular flange, said flange having diametrically disposed vertical grooves, a
stopper removably fitting in the neck and provided With an upper annular flange coextensive With the flange of the neck, said stopper having a vertical bore, a locking member removably mounted on the stopper and provided With depending vertical legs terminating in horizontal lugs, the said lugs being insertible through the groove in the flange of the neck, the stopper being mounted for rotation in the neck whereby to permit the lugs of said member to engage against the flange of the neck, and a spring carried by the member and extending through the bore of the stopper and exerting its tension against the member so as to eject the member When the lugs of the latter are alined With said grooves.
