GISAAC W. ENGLAND, OF PASSA-IC, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO vJPASSAIC METAL WARE COMPANY, OF PASSAIC, NEWJERSEY, .A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
FRAME OR EASEL.
tion.
My invention relates to improvements in frames, easels or the like, provided with a foldable supporting piece at the back, whereby the device maybe set in an inclined position, and the parts may be snugly folded together when not in use.
The object of my invention is to provide simple and eliicient -means for connecting the support or leg and its brace with the frame or easel, whereby the parts may be readily applied and removed without injury.
In carrying out my invention I'provide a body portion, such as a frame or plate and a back to be attached thereto, with a fastening piece that is provided with a projecting loop passing through the back, a support or leg having an opening to receive said loop, and a locking member adapted to slide through said loop, between the latter and the support, for retaining said parts securely together. Similar means may be utilized to connect to the back a brace for said support or leg, means being provided to permit relative movement between the support and brace to enable the support to be held out}.
wardly to keep the device resting in an in clined position, or to permit the parts tobe folded when not in use.
My invention also comprises novel details of improvement and combinations of parts that will be more fully hereinafter set forth and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein,
Figure 1 is a rear View, partly broken, of a frame or easel embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof; Fig. 8 is an enlarged detail perspective view of the fastening piece; Fig. 4 is a section on theline 4, 4, in Fig. 3.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
The body portion illustrated comprises a suitable frame or plate 1, adapted in any usual manner to serve for carrying or supporting pictures or the like, and at 2 is a Specification of Letters Patent.
' sition.
Patented Oct. 28,1913.
Application filed'August 24, 1912. SerialiN'o. 716,847.
I have shown the marginal portion 1 of frame or plate 1 as bent over the edges of back2 .to retain the latter in place.
At 3 is a fastening piece, which maybe of suitable relatively thin metal, placed between frame or plate 1 andback 2, and shown provided with aloop 3 raised a suitable distance frompiece 3, which loop projects through a slot or opening 2' inback 2.
At 4 is a support or leg, which may be of any suitable material, theupper portion 4 of which is located againstback 2 and is provided with aslot 4 through whichloop 3? passes When said slot alines with opening 2 ofback 2,andat 5 is a retaining or locking member to pass throughloop 3 againstpart 4 ofsupport 4.Member 5 is shown provided with projections orwings 5 to limit the sliding movement of said member throughloop 3, theparts 5 being adapted to bear against the loop.Member 5 may be provided with aneye 5", whereby the device may be hung or suspended from any suitable support. When the parts are in the position shown the support orleg 4 will be securely swing or hinge at 4 so as to be moved .outwardly as in Fig. 2, to retain the device in the manner of an easel.
At 6 is a brace forsupport 4, the lower end 6 of which brace is provided with a slot 6 (corresponding to theslot 4 of support 4), and theback 2 has aslot 2 through which slots aloop 3 of afastening piece 3 passes, in the manner before described with respect to support 4, thelower member 5 being passed throughloop 3 and over the adjacent part of brace 6, to retain brace 6 uponback 2 in manner similar to that described with respect to theupper member 5 andsupport 4, thelower member 5 havingprojections 5 retaining said member in po- Brace 6 is adapted to be bent or swing at 6 adjacent toback 2 and at 6 adjacent to support 4, the end portion 6 of which brace is shown located against the inner side ofsupport 4.Support 4 is shown provided with avertical slot 4", to which the end portion 6 of brace 6 is slidably connected, as by an eyelet or keeper 7.
By means of my improvements support A and brace 6 may be readily attached to and detached fromback 2, and a firm and secure attachment of the parts is effected. My im provements will be found particularly useful where theback 2 is made of cardboard or the like, and Where thesupport 4 and brace 6 are made of similar material, since the parts are reliably held snugly together, Without danger of becoming loosened, and without danger of breaking the parts when adjustments are being made.
Having now described my invention what I claim is 1. A device of the character described comprising a body portion provided with a slot, a loop passing through said slot, a support having a slot receiving said loop, and a member slidably fitted within said loop against said support retaining said support upon the body portion.
2. A device of the character described comprising a body portion provided with a slot, a loo-p passing through said slot, a support having a slot receiving said loop, a member fitted within said loop retaining said support upon the body portion, said body portion having another slot, aloop passing through said slot, a brace having a slot receiving said loop, a member passing through said loop retaining said brace upon said body portion, and means movably connecting said brace with said support.
3. A device of the character described comprising a frame, a back secured thereto and having a slot, a fastening piece on the side of said back toward said frame and having a loop passing through said slot, a support having a slot receiving said loop, and a member passing through said loop between the latter and said support retaining said support upon said back said support having a hinge portion below said member.
4. A device of the character described comprising a frame, a back secured thereto and having a slot, a fastening piece on one side of said back and having a loop passing through said slot, a brace having a slot receiving said loop, a member passing through said loop retaining said brace upon said back, a support connected with the frame and means movably connecting said brace with said support.
5. A device of the character described comprising a frame, a back secured thereto and having a slot, a fastening piece on one side of said back and having a loop passing through said slot, a support having a slot receiving said loop, a member passing through said loop retaining said support upon said back, a brace movably connected with said support, said brace having a slot, a loop passing through said slot and carried by said back, and a member passing through said loop retaining said brace upon said support.
6. A device of the character described comprising a body portion provided with a slot, a loop passing through said slot, a sup port having a slot receiving said loop, and a member fitted within said loop retaining said support upon the body portion, said member having an eye above said loop, and means to prevent said member from being pulled through said loop in an upward direction.
Signed at Passaic in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey this twentysecond day of August, A. D. 1912.
