Description

R. A. LEE.
SAFETY OATOH.
APPLIOATION FILED SEPT. 11, 1911-.
1,062,284. I Patented May 20, 1913.
lm [Masses ROY ABRAHAM LEE, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
SAFETY-CATCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 11, 1911. Serial No. 648,595.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROY A. LEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety- Catches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in safety catches for breastpins, brooches and the like.
The invention has for its object to produce a catch of this character particularly adapted for use upon articles of jewelry and the like wherein a pivoted pin is employed for attaching devices to cloth.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a catch such as described which is formed from a single piece of material and which is adapted to be secured to the object upon which it is used.
In the drawing :Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken through Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, thenumeral 1 designates the body of a bar pin having soldered near one of its ends a pair of spaced perforated ears 2 and between which the end of the pin 3 is pivotally connected.
The catch is formed from a single strip of spring metal and consists of a flat base portion 4 having one of its ends terminating in arigid guard plate 5 and its opposite end terminating in a stem 6, said stem being provided with an arc-shaped bight portion 7 which terminates in abill 8 which ap- (Jopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Iatents,
proaches theguard plate 5 and curves in the direction of said stem. This catch is then soldered to the desired object. Thebody 1 is preferably formed with a recess 9 and in which, when the catch proper is to be secured thereto the base plate 4 thereof is seated and solder applied.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a simple and efficient catch has been produced, and one which may be cheaply manufactured.
The pin is readily inserted in the catch by slight pressure being applied thereto which will spring the curved bill 8 sufliciently to allow the pin to pass thereby, to be securely held against accidental displacement. Due to the curvature of the bill 8 in a direction toward the stem 6 the pin may be easily and quickly released from the catch.
What is claimed, is
The combination with a plate having a recess, of a one piece resilient catch member having a straight fiat central portion seated in said recess in the plate with one arm extending outwardly and slightly curved to form a guard while the opposite arm is extended outwardly and similarly curved in an opposite direction with the extremity thereof bent around and toward the central portion of the catch to form a pin holding portion, and a pin connected with the plate and adapted to be passed between the guard arm and the pin holding portion of the catch and then into said pin holding portion. In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
