CRUPPER. f
Be it known that we, SAM 1).
States, residing at Shelbyville, in the county ofShelby, State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Orupper, of which thefollowing is a specification.
It is an object of the pret-ient'invention to provide a. crupper, comprising a; movable member which may be held in adjusted positions, to regulate the sweep which it is desired to give to the tail of the animal,ad-
justable means being provided for swinging .the free upper end of the movable member forwardly, and spring meansbeing provided for limiting the forward. swinging movement of the upper, free end of said member. V A further object of the invention is to 1 member may readily be released, when de-,
provide. a crupper in which the tail-holding sired.
With the foregoing and other objects in view whichwill appear asthe description.
proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and 1n the details of construction hereinafterdescribed 1 shows the device in perspective, applied to an animal; Fig. 2 shows'the device in perspective, detached; and Fig. 3'is a fragmental side elevation, enlarged from Fig. 2.
In carrying out the invention there is provided a body member, consisting of a pair of curved plates'l, conforming to the rump of the horse.
Fixed to theforward ends 7 of the plates 1, arestraps 2, connected by means of buckles 3 or the'like, with the back strap 4, the back strap 4 being connected by means of side straps 5, withthe flank straps 6. It is to be understood, however, that the device constituting the subject matter of this invention may be assembled with a harness of any desired sort, the attaching rigging being largely a matter, of choice. When the Qfiank straps 6 are used, the plates 1 are equipped, adjacent their ends, with eyes '7 adapted to receive the flank straps 6.
The invention further includes a, troughshaped tail-holder '8 which is pivotally connectedflwith the body member, comprising Specification of Letters Patent.
the plates 1. The tail-holder 8 is equipped,
adjacent its lower end, with outstanding studs 9 adapted to register in eyes 10, formed upon the plates 1, the construction, obvi- 'ously,'being such that the tail-holder 8 ma be tilted to any desired angle.
/ The tail-holder 8 is equipped intermediate standing lugs 11, adapted to receive, loosely,

its ends, and upon its outer edges, with out- 1 being bolts, havingheads 14 at their rear ends, adapted to engage the rear faces of the lugs 11. Theforwardends of thebolts 12 are extended throughlugs 15, upstanding from the plates 1, adjacent the forward ends of the plates.Wing nuts 16 are threaded upon theforwardends of thebolts 12, thewing nuts 16 being adapted. to engage the forward faces of thelugs 15. Helical springs17 surround thebolts 12, the springs abutting at their rear ends, against the lugs 11, and at their forward The operation of the device is'as follows. l Vhen the body member, comprising the plates 1, is mounted upon the rump of the animal, and secured thereon in any desired manner, as shown in Fig. 1, the tail of the animal is engaged by the tail-holder 8. By
ends, against the rotating thewing nuts 16, thebolts 12 will i be drawn forwardly, thereby tilting the free,
upper end of the tail-holderS forwardly,
and disposing the tail of the animal in any desired sweep. Obviously, by I unscrewing thewingnuts 16, the tail of the animal may be let down.
Thebolts 12 and the wing I nuts 16 constitute adjustable means for tilting the free upper end of thetailholder 8 forwardly. Likewise, the-springs 17 constitute yieldable means for preventingthe free upper ends oftlie'tail holder 8 from swin in forwardl be 0nd the oint to b :3 y y P which it has been adjusted by meansof the bolt and nut connection 1216.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is i 1. A device of the class described compris- 2 ing a body member; a tail-holder pivoted to the bodymember; adjustable means for swinging the free upper end of the tailholder forwardly and resilient means for limiting the forward movement of: the upper end of the tail-holder after the same has been adjusted.
' '2. A device of the class described com- I prising a body member; a tail-holder pivotally connected with the body member; threaded elements united with the tail holder and loosely engaged with the body member; nuts upon the threaded elements, adapted to engage with the body member, to swing the free upper end of the tailholder forwardly; and compression springs surrounding the threaded elements, and bearing against the tail-holder and against the body member.
3. A crupper comprising cooperating parts, one of which parts is a body member, the other of which parts is a tail-holder pivotally connected with the body member; a threaded element engaged with one of said parts; a nut upon the threaded element, adapted to engage the other of said parts; and a compression spring surrounding the threaded element, and bearing against both of said parts.
4. A device of the class described comprising a body member provided with upstanding eyes; a tail-holder having bearings adapted to oscillate in the eyes; the
body member and the tail-holder being provided with outstanding lugs; a threaded element extended through the lugs, and having a head adapted to engage the lug of the tail-holder;'a nut upon the threaded element, adapted to engage the lug of the body member; and a compression spring surrounding the threaded member and abutting against the lugs.
5. A device of the class described comprising a body member; a tail holder pivotally connected with the body member; the body member and the tail-holder being provided with outstanding lugs; a threaded element extended through the lugs, and having a head adapted to engage with one lug; a nut on the threaded member, adapted to engage with the other lug; and a compression spring surrounding the threaded member, and abutting against the lugs.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own, we have hereto affixed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
