' cum. Es m. anemia; or inrrnnnnr, massacfinsn'r'rs.
rarer, manque-cur,"
To all whom concern: Be it known that I, CHARLES M. GAGE,-Jr., a citizen of the United States, and resident of East Pepperell, county of Middlesex,
State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Paper Drinking-Cups, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the-drawing representing like parts.
This invention has for its object the pro:
duction of an improved hygienic paper.
' The drawing represents in elevation and vertical section a-drinking cup embodying my invention, the thickness of the wall of the cup body being exaggerated,
The drinking cup embodying my invention is shown as comprising a tubular and slightlytapered body 1 of thin and tough paper of suitable quality, the longitudinal edges of the blank being overlapped at 2 and suitably united, the body being permanently closed at one end by a stiff disk 3 ofpaper. Herein the bottom is held in place between anannular head 4 formedin any suitable manner on theinterior of the body, and a continuous annular and transversely convexed lip 5. This lip is formed by rolling the lower edge of the body over inwardly upon itself, by any suitable means forming no part of my present invention.
Thedisk 4 is in practice pushed downward into the body from its open upper end i and snapped into place between the bead 4:
and the lip 5, and is securely held in place therebetween in a water-tight manner by a coating of parafiin or other suitable moisture-repellant waxy material, applied while hot and fluid by immersing the cup in a bath of the molten coating material and removing and quickly cooling the coated cup.
spe m fl a ta PatenaaomL1'a12. Application filed March ao,1912 -.,se;1a1-no.ss7,'aoa.
The {cup is preferabl coated in accordance with the process orming the subject matter of Unlted State's Patent No. 1,007,086
granted to O. M. Gage 'onthe 31st, day of October, 1911.
- Heretofore drinking cups of this general character have been 'made with a sharp edge around the open end thereof, orin some cases they have beenm'ade with a light wire encircling the open end, to stiffen the body of the,cup and facilitate handling thereof. Such a-construction, if the wire is used, adds very materially to the cost of construction,
and the cups cannot be manufactured and.
sold commercially at the small price demanded, and when the edge is left plain the cup is not stifi enough to be handled conveniently, nor is it pleasant'to drink from, owing to the sharp edge. Furthermore, when such cups are nested in the holders it often happens that more than one cup will be drawn out when a user desires to remove a cup from the holder. 1 obviate these objections by rolling oven the edge of the body at the open end to form a continuousterial, the latter when it hardens serving to stiffen the open end of the cup in a very superior manner. This lip gives a much better and pleasanter drinln'ng edge, the cup when filledwith water is stlfi enough tobe handled easily and conveniently, and as the lip 5 is out-turned it prevents nested cups from fitting together too snugly, and more than one at a time cannot be withdrawn. Obviously the bottom lip 5 will also-receive and hold some of the coating material, and
the bottom of the cup will thereby be stifliened and strengthened in a manner similar to that described with relation to thelip 6,
cost of production, and the filling up. of the lfreceptacle formed by such lip, with the coatyingmaterial, requires no extra care or at-:
