J. W. GUNTHBR. SCREW PROPELLER. APPLIOATIO FILED 00T. 24, 1911.

'Mahnmal/maman: l Be it known'that I, JOSEPH W. GUNTHER,
i a citizen ofthe United States, residing atl Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon,` ,havel invented new and useful Im rovements in' Screw-Propellers, of which tlie following is a specificatlon.
The yinvention relates, to pro ellers, and
more particularly to the class o screw prof 1o pellersfor boatsl or other water crafts.
Y. out the possibility of the loss of energy or its hold. upon the water while in action, thereb assuring high speed inthe propulsion o the boat for the advancement of the same.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a propeller of this character which is simple in constructionz thoroughly l reliableand eicient in operation, and in'- exp'ensive 1n manufacture. f
ith these and other objects in view, th invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, .illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a boat, showing the propeller in position relative thereto and constructed in accordance with the in vention. 2 is an end elevation of the propeller. ig. 3 is a-vertical lon 'tudinal sectional view through the same. ig. 4 is an enlarged side elevation ofv the ropeller.
Similar reference characters indlcate cor- 'respondin parts throughout the several views of t e drawings. f
Referring vto the drawings by numerals, 5 designates a portion of the hull of a boat, and 6 the propeller shaft which is operated from an engine or turbine (not shown), of any improved ty e, the propeller shaft being mounted in t e hull of theboat in the l Y 4usual manner, and projects outwardly therefrom'at the stern of the said hull, as

usual, and'v has 'fixed-f-threto a propeller, presently described.
The propeller comprises ,aspiral blade 7 the same being spirally arranged about thepropeller shat 6, and has its inner ed e notched, as at 8, to formton es 9, t e same being outbent and having assed therethrough suitable fasteners '10, t ereby securing) the blade to a hub-12. The ends of thelade 7 are rounded, as at 11, and extend past eachother, so as to be disposed in over appin relation relative to the axis of rotation o theshaft 6. The.` rounded ends 11 of theblade 7 will permit the same to enter the water' without impeding the ro.
- tat-ion of theI blade or causing|the feathering of the blade upon the water, during the rotation of the same. C l.
Formed at or fixed to ,the outer edge of theblade 7, and coextensive with the greater portion of the trend of. the same, isv anoutturned flange 13, the same being aduall tapered outwardly,-as at 14, towar the endys thereof from a medial point of the same, the 'flange 13 being desi ned to hold the water against theblade 7 hile rotating and prevent the dispersing of the water laterally when theblade is rotatin therein thus assuring a positive impact o? the blade against the water while active for advancing the boat, without persceptible unsteadiness in the forward travel thereof, or impeding its movement. ends terminatin at the point of the rounded ends of thebla e 7 by reason of its tapered Theflange 13, which has its without interfering with the rotation of the blade therein or resisting the driving energy of the engine or turbine operating the propeller shaft. Furthermore theflange 13 will enable the blade to gri and hold the water during the rotation o the blade and cause it to exert maximum force against the same, whereby ya uniform and high s eed may be, attained for advancing the oat. Thehub 12 may be fo'rmed inte al with theblade 7, and is secured to thes aft 6 in anv desirable manner.V v l From the foregoing, taken in connection with the `accompanying drawings, it is vthought that the construction and oI eration of the invention will be readily un erstood, without requiring a more extended explana tion.. l
What is claimed is:
A propeller ofthe class described, com
prising e spf'ifal blad@ having .ie-ends eisposed 1n overlapping relation to the exis of trally of the blade and carr ing the same.
rotation thereof and-'also provided with rounded ed es, and en outt-urnedan e at thevouter e ge of the blade, the said ange bein tapered Vin reverse directions from e medlal point thereof toward vits; lends, the' ends of the Bange merging in the rounded weones edges of the'blede, and a. hub located cen-A 10 In testimon whereof a x my lsignature impresence Fo two Witnesses.
