UNITED STATES PATENT @FFICE.
CHARLES H. G-IESE, JR., 0]? NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
HAT-PIN PROTECTOR OR GUARD. 7
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. GIEsE, J r., citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hat Pin Protectors or Guards, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hat pins.
The object is to provide a hat pin embodying such characteristics that when once inserted it will not be liable to accidental displacement with reference to the wearers hat and hair, the means for preventing displacement also providing a guard so that the pointed projecting end of the pin cannot injure other persons with whom the wearer may come in contact.
With the above and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully explained, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and particularly pointed out in the appended claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the size, proportion, form and minor details without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings: Figure l is a side elevation of the invention showing its application. Fig. 2 is a side view illustrating a portion of the pin seated in the guard, the guard being shown partly in section. Fig. 3 is an end view of the guard. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the guard showing the pin inserted therein.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings the reference character A indicates a, hat on the wearer in order that the application of my invention may be understood. The reference character 9 indicates a hat pin which may be provided with a head 10 of any desired form.
My improved guard may consist of a sleeve 2 at the outer end of which is disposed a head which may be of any form and which is designed particularly for ornamental purposes and as shown embodying what may be Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 22, 1911.
Patented Apr. 23, 1912.
Serial No. 628,761.
termed a slittedcup 8. The inner end of the sleeve 2 is provided with a central opening 4: with the end directed inwardly of the sleeve and also slitted as at 5 from the opening toward the side walls of the sleeve for the purpose of providing gripping fingers 6.
Vithin and bearing against the inner faces of opposite ends of the sleeve 2 is a helical spring 7 through the bore of which latter the pin 9 is adapted to be inserted.
As shown in the accompanying drawings, theheads 8 and 10 are alike in formation but it is obvious that they may be different in formation. In any event the guard is preferably composed of a sleeve having a helical spring mounted therein with the bore of the spring in alinement with the central opening 4 at the inner end of the sleeve so that the pointed end of the pin 9 when it is inserted through said opening 4 will be gripped by the fingers 6 to prevent accidental dislodgment of the pin, the helical spring 7 also gripping the pin to reinforce the gripping action of said fingers, thereby insuring against accidental dislodgment of the pin and also providing a guard whereby persons who may contact with the wearer will not be injured by the pointed end of the pin.
What is claimed is:
A hat pin guard comprising a cylindrical tube having one end directed inwardly with its inwardly directed end provided with a central perforation and having slots radiating from the perforation to provide the in ner end of the tube with gripping fingers and a spring member in the tube for engagement with the fingers to omvably force them into binding engagement with the pin and thereby reinforce the gripping action of said fingers on said pin.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 18th day of April 1911.
CHAS. H. omen, JR.
