APPLICATION FILED APR. 2, 1909.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented-Feb. 27, 1912.
Application filed April 2, 1909. Serial No. 487,448.
,of the invention being to combine with the flooring boards, which have ooves in their opposing edges, wear-strips 0 metal disposed between the opposing edges of the flooring boards, extending to and flush with the upper and lower surfaces thereof and provided at points between their upper and lower edges with laterally extending tongues which engage the grooves in the flooring boards, the said wear-strips serving to prevent wear of the flooring boards and presenting metal surfaces between the flooring boards whichgreatly facilitate the use of the shovel on the floor, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 is a perspective, partly in section, of a portion of a floor provided with wear-strips constructed and disposed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of one of the wear-strips. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of the same, on a larger scale.
In accordance with this invention, the flooring boards 1 are provided in their opposing edges'with grooves 2. Between each pair of flooring boardsis placed awearstrip 3, which is preferabl made of iron or steel, and the upper an lower edges of which are flush with the upper and lower surfaces of the flooring boards. Each of the said strips is provided at opposite sides at points midway between the upper and lower edges with laterally extending tongues i formed integrally therewith, which tongues engage and fill the grooves 2 of the flooring boards and serve to firmly connect the wearstrips of the flooring boards. The outer edges of the wear-strips are rounded, as at 5, at the exposed surfaces of the flooring boards.
It will be understood that the Wear-strips present metallic upper surfaces at the upper surfaces of the floor which serve to prevent the flooring boards from being worn by the scraping of a shovel when. material is being shoveled from the floor. Furthermore the said metallic upper surfaces of the wearstrips in addition to preserving the floor, also facilitate the movement of the shovel on the surface of the floor.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is As a new article of manufacture, a crossshape strengthening spline for mill floors, said spline being constructed to have a comparatlvely thin longitudinal vertical web the top and bottom edges of which are adapted to extend flush with the upper and lower faces of the floor planks and central op ositely disposed horizontal longitudinahside tongues adapted to enter central longitudinal grooves 1n the edges of the floorplanks ofa mill floor.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signa tures in presence of two witnesses. v
