JOHN H. BROWN, 01? IVEARSEILLES, ILLINOIS.
SHOE OR BOOT TREAD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 5, 1911.
Application filed June 23, 1910. Serial No. 568,471.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marseilles, county of Lasalle, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe or Boot Treads, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in boot or shoe treads and has for its object the provision of an improved tread of the nature set forth which shall be of simple construction and efficient in its operation.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of a shoe provided with a tread embodying my invention, Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same on a reduced scale, Fig. 3, a section on line w 0s of Fig. 1, Fig. 4, a section on line y-y of Fig. 1, Fig. 5, a perspective view of one of the metallic plates employed in my device, Fig. 6, a perspective view of one of the rubber tread members employed in my device, and Fig. 7, a section of the plate shown in Fig. 5.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings comprisesmetallic plates 1 secured to the bottom of the shoe and provided with openings for the projection of rubber blocks 4: on rubber tread members 3. Theportions 2 ofplate 1 lying between adjacent of said openings are raised as shown to form recesses for the accommodation of members 3 so as to bring the inner faces of members 3 flush with the inner face of the corresponding plate. In orderto prevent cutting of the sides of projections 41 the edges of the openings inplate 1 are turned outwardly or rounded as shown.
Canvas sheets 5 and 6 are interposed betweenplates 1 and the sole and heel of the shoe respectively as shown and the plates and sheets secured in position by means of nails 7 driven through openings in said plates and into the sole or heel of the shoe. Thecanvas sheet 6 and the rubber tread members 3 are made considerably thicker for the heel portions in order to better stand the strains thereon and provide the requisite cushion.
The construction above set forth will provide a protection for the bottom of the boot or shoe and also will prevent slipping of the wearer. If desired, the rubber tread mem bers may be renewed by removing the corresponding plates. By providing separate plates for the sole the requisite flexibility therein is obtained.
\Vhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I therefore do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction set forth but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a device of the class described, the combination with a boot or shoe, of a metallic plate the body of which lies flat against and is secured to the bottom of the shoe, said plate being provided with a plurality of pairs of adjacent openings therethrough, the portions of said plate between the two openings of each pair being raised to form recesses, and U-shaped resilient members placed in said recesses with their limbs passing through said openings; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the preesnce of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN H. BROWN.
