Description

J. w. IVORY.
PAD HOLDER FOR DENTAL PURPOSES.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 27, 1911.
Patented N0v. 28,1911.
JAMES W. IVORY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
PAD-HOLDER FOR DENTAL PURPOSES.
Application filed February 27, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES WV. IVORY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Pad-Holder for Dental Purposes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a device for absorbing saliva at a tooth during a dental operation, and it consists of the construc tion and operation of the same, as will be hereinafter described, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the claims.
For the purpose of explaining my invention, the accompanying drawing illustrates a satisfactory reduction of the same to practice, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific arrangement and organization shown and described.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a pad or roll holder embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of another form thereof, in position on a tooth and gum, Figs. 1 and 2 showing but one of the jaws provided with a pad or roll. Fig. 3 represent-s another view of the form shown in Fig. 2, both pads or rolls being removed therefrom.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings :A designates a pair of jaws each of which is on the sides of a back or back plate B of metal or other suitable material having its ends C inturned as lips forming an open channeled body within which a pad or roll D of absorbent material may be inserted and held. The channel of said body faces in a direction opposite to the back B, so as in one case to be below the same and in other case to be above the same, as the holder is applied to a lower or upper jaw. The jaws A are connected by a bow composed of the arms E which are sufficiently pliable or resilient to allow said arms to separate and close as occasion may require. Attached to the said arms is the outwardlyprojecting tongue or handle member F which in the present instance is integral with the arms, and the latter may be integral with the jaws A, as clearly shown Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 28, 1911.
Serial No. 611,027.
in Figs. 2 and 3, where the jaws are of skeleton form for the purpose of lightness, but the inturned ends of the same comprise sectional lips C, while the sides of the jaws are joined at top by the cross bars C producing, however, channeled bodies similar to Fig. l, for receiving and holding pads or rolls D.
It will be seen that owing to the handle F the device may be carried conveniently,
introduced into the mouth and on opposite sides of a tooth or teeth, so that the pads or rolls contact with the gum, whereby the saliva is absorbed, a matter of importance during the dental operation, and sufficient pressure may be applied from the handle to hold the pads firmly against the gums, which operation may be executed either by the patient, operator or attendant.
It will be seen that while portions of the pads on the sides of the holder may contact with the sides of the gum, the pads present their faces opposite to the back B directed to the floor of the lower jaw or roof of the upper jaw and contact therewith, as the case may be, and so absorb saliva where the greatest quantity of the same exists. This also leaves the backs B comparatively free of saliva, as the latter will not lodge thereon to any material extent and interfere with the operation.
Having thusdescribed my invention what Y I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device for the purpose stated, back plates, inturned jaws on opposite sides of said plates, and means for connecting said plates, said jaws being separated, forming an open channel on the face side opposite to said back.
2. A device for the purpose stated composed of back plates, jaws on opposite sides thereof, a bow connecting said plates, and
an outwardly extending carrying member.
on said bow.
3. A device for the purpose stated composed of back plates, inturned jaws on opposite sides of said plates, and means for connecting said plates, said plates being of skeleton form.
JAMES W. IVORY. Witnesses:
