GEORGE MARKUS, OF STONEGA, VIRGINIA.
IBEDSTEAD.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed March 20, 1911.
Patented Nov. 7, 1911. Serial No. 615,637.
for its object to provide side rails for bedsteads in a manner as hereinafter set forth capable of having the length thereof increased or diminished when occasion so requires, thereby providing for different lengths of beds.
Further objects of the invention are to provide an extensible side rail for bedsteads which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, eflicient in its use, conveniently adjusted to increase or diminish the length thereof, readily set up with respect to the other elements of the bedstead, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
\Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel con-,
' embodiment of the invention but it is to be rail in accordance with this invention, therail being broken away at one end. Fig. 2 1s a longitudinal sectional View of a slde rail in accordance w1th this invention, the
rail being extended and broken away at one end. Fig. 3 is a section on line III-III,
Fig. 2. looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 4 is a section on line IVIV, Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the sections of the rail. Fig. 6 is a perspective View of a shiftable coupling device for the sections of the rail, and, Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the other section of the rail, said section being broken away. i
' Referring to the drawings in detail, 2 denotes a bed post through which is detachably connected in a known manner the section A of the side rail, the other section of the side rail is indicated by the reference character B. The section A is of less length than the section B and extends into and is shiftable with respect to the said section B.
The bed rail is formed of the two sections A and B, the section A being formed with 7 what may be termed ahead 4 at one end of a rectangular body-portion 4 Thehead 4 is of greater Width than thebody portion 4 and of greater height than said body-portion 4:, but the top of thehead 4 is flush with the top of the body-portion 4*. That end of the body-portion 4* which merges into thehead 4 is formed with a relatively long vertically disposed longitudinally-extendingslot 5 and eachside 4" of the body-portion 4*, approximately centrally of the side has an integral V-shaped ridge 6 which extends longitudinally and is of the same length as the length of the body-portion 4 The section B is adapted to be secured to the opposite bed post in a known manner and comprises a relatively long rectangular body-portion 1 formed at one end with a longitudinally-extendingrecess 8 having each of the side walls thereof provided with a longitudinally-extending \I-shaped guide groove 7 which is of the same contour as theribs 6 of the body-portion 4". Therecess 8 is adapted to receive the body-portion 4 and is of the same length as the body-portion 4. Thegrooves 7 are for the reception of theribs 6 and constitute not only a guiding means for the ribs but also means to prevent vertical movement of the body-'portion 4 with respect to the body-portion 1 of the section B.
Therecess 8 is of less depth than the depth of the body-portion 1, but of greater height than the height of the body-portion 4* and arranged within said groove is ashiftable locking plate 2 formed, at each end with as'crewthreaded aperture 2. One end of thelocking plate 2 is detachably-connected with the body-portion 4 through the medium of a headed bolt'3, the latter extending through theslot 5. The other end of thelocking member 2 is detachably connected with the body-portion 1 by aheaded screw 11. A clearance is provided for the shank of thescrew 11 by aslot 10 in the bottom wall of therecess 8.
By loosenin the screw orbolt 3 thebodyportion 4 can e shifted with respect to therecess 8 thereby decreasing or increasing the len th of the rail. The body-portion 4 toget er with thelocking plate 2 can be positioned within therecess 8 by adjusting the screw orbolt 11. When the locking iece '2 and body-portion 4 are positioned within therecess 8, thehead 4 abuts against the end of the body-portion 1. By t1 htening the bolts orscrews 3 and ll when t e body-portion' andlocking piece 2 are positioned within therecess 8, the section B is prevented from shifting with respect to the section ooaree a coupling plate connected to said recessed section and capable of being shifted outwardly with respect to said section, said short section including a body portion and a head, said body portion having laterally uide ribs engaging in said grooves, said ody portion and said long section each formed with a longitudinally extending slot,
means extending through the slot of the long section and engaging with the coupling plate for connecting one end thereof in position, and means extending through said body ortion and engaging with the other end 0 the coupling plate for adjustably connecting the plate to the body portion, said body portion mounted upon the coupling plate and extending in said recess.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE MARKUS.
