' Patented Oct. 24, 1911.
Application filed July 17, 1911i Serial No; 638,898.
To all whom it may concern:
Be' it known that I, CHARLES T. Bnoo unn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Wayne and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Egg-Box Partition, of which the follow- This invention relates to folding partiboxes and the like and has for its primary object to provide partitions which can be collapsed 'or folded compactly to occupy a space within the extremities of one of the partitions.
A furtherobjeet is to provide partitionswhich will permit of the smallest possible size of container or box being used.
With the above and other objects in view this invention is embodied in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts as hereinafter described and as shown in the accompanying drawings, in which similar reference characters indicate similar parts, and in -which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the various partitions as in. open position. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof in folded position. 3 is a'detail in elevation of the longitudinal partition. Fig. 4 is a detail in elevation of the longitudinal strip. Fig. 5 is a detail in elevation of one of the lateral partitions. Fig. 6 is a fragmental view in perspectiveof a modification.
The partition as herein describedand as shown in the drawings is particularly adapted for use in boxes adapted to contain twelve eggs arranged in two rows of six eggs each.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 10 designates the longitudinal partition and 11, five lateral partitions which are mounted centrally on thepartition 10 and which tion, thepartition 10 being provided with a series ofopen slots 16 in the upper edge thereof whichslots 16 have one edge thereprojecting tooth on the and the lateral partitions with anopen slot 13 arranged centrally at the lower edge thereof and anaperture 15 spaced above the inner; end of the said slot, whereby when the said partitions are'brought't'o'gether theteeth 18 other edge thereof,
parts in position.
At the respective" ends of thelateral partitions 11 are providedopen slots 13 on the 11 whereby lower edge thereof and apertures 15' are disposed above the said slots.
The respective slots 13' andapertures 15 of thevarious partitions 11 are in horizontal alinement and alongitudinal strip 12 having a series ofopen slots 16 in the upper edge thereof.
whichslots 16 have one edge thereof notched as indicated at 17' and a projecting tooth 18' on the other ed 'e, is adapted to pass through theslot 13 to engage theteeth 18 in the apertures 15' of thepartitions 11 to lock the said strip on the ends of the partitions. The apertures 15- are arranged below the center of thepartitions 11 and the strip-l2 is of a width less than half of thepartitions 11. Thelateral partitions 11 are spaced equally along the longitudinal partitionthus forming twelve cells of equal dimensions. Thestrip 12 has it extremities within the extremities of the partition, 10, or in close proximity to the outer partitions upon thepartitions 11 being folded against. thepartition 10 the same will not project beyond the extremity of thepartition 10 as clearly shown in Fig. 2. This permits the partitions to be folded together to occupy a space within the extremities of thepartition 10 for convenience in containing said partitions within the box when folded, the ends of thepartitions 11 being connected or joined by thestrip 12 permit them to be folded or unfolded simultaneously and also tends to retain thepartitions 11 in position as the eggs are inserted therein. It will be noted that the-strip 12 passes through several of the cells between the partitions but as the same is of a width less than half the Width of thepartitions 11 the eggs can be placed within the cells as the bulged or larger diameter'of the eggs extends over the top of the strip. Thus thestrip 12 does not interfere with the eggs contained Within the cells and should the eggs strike the upper edge thereof the same will bend'outwardly to followthe natural shape of the egg; Thestrip 12 therefore allows the ends of the-lateral partitions 1-1 to be connected or joined without adding to the size of the box or extending the said partitions; i
In Fig. 6 is shown a modifiedstrip 12 which is a width equal to that of thepartitions 11 andpartition 10 and when thepartitions 11 are connected by thestrip 12 they are capable of being folded the same as when provided with the narrower strip '12; It is preferable however to use thenarrower strlp 12 which lies below .the center.-
main straight.
. What is claimed as new is A device of the character described comprising a longitudinal partition, a plurality of equally spaced lateral partitions mounted centrally thereto and forming a plurality of equally sized cells, and eachhavmg an open slot in the lower edge thereof at one end and an aperture above the said slot, and a longitudinal strip having a series of open 12 thus permitting all of the parts to re-' lateral partition and passing through a number of the cells, and being of shorter length than the longitudinal partition with the extremities thereof lyin within the extremities of the longitu 'nal partition, whereby the device may be used with the smal estvpossible container and whereby the said rip and lateral partitions may be folded against the longitudinal partition.
, In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
