CHARLES D. BOWYER, 0F CAMDEN, NEW JERSEY, AND LE ROY N. BOORSE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
TWIN BUNG-SPOUT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. October 20, 1910. Serial No. 588,172.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, CHARLES D. Bowman and Ln RoY N. Boonsn, citizens of the United States, residing, respectively, at Camden and Philadelphia, in the counties of Camden and Philadelphia, States of New Jersey and Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Twin Bung-Spout, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a new and useful twin spout adapted for use in connection with barrels and the like, and the main object of the invention is to provide a device of this design, embodying novel features of construction.
A further object of the invention is to provide a twin spout adapted for insertion into bung holes of various sizes, and pro vided with means for instantly cutting off or permitting the flow of the contents of the barrel.
A further object of the invention is to provide a twin spout, the spouts of which extend directly at right angles to one an other, so that the closing member for cutting off and turning on the fluid, may be thrown from one to the other.
A further object of the invention is to construct these twin spouts in the form of a single casting, in order that the passageways of both the spouts may merge into one opening. In the accompanying drawings, however, there is only disclosed one particular form of the invention, but in practical fields this form may require slight alterations, to which the applicants are entitled, provided the alterations are comprehended in the appended claims.
Other features and combinations of parts will hereinafter be set forth, illustrated in the drawings, and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a barrel or hogshead, showing applied thereto a twin spout. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the barrel, showing the larger spout threaded into the bung hole. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing the smaller spout threaded into the bung hole.
In regard to the drawings, 1 denotes the usual form of barrel or hogshead, into the bung hole 2 of which, the twin spout is threaded. This twin spout is formed in a single casting which comprises the two spouts at and 5, arranged directly at right angles to one another, one being of a smaller diameter than the other. Each spout is provided with threads 6, to engage the threads of the bung hole, in order to anchor the twin spouts properly in place. The passage-ways or bores of the two spouts are designated.
at 7. WVhen the contents of the barrel or hogshead are flowing, they enter the bore 7 and then exit through the outlet openingv 8, into the receptacle 9. The purpose of making the spouts of various diameters, is to permit the twin spout to be utilized in connection with bung holes of various sizes. The device between the two spouts is provided with a slot 10 and upon each side of the slot ears 11 are disposed, between which alever 12 is disposed. Thislever 12 is mounted upon apin 13, which is mounted in bearings of the said ears. The end of the lever which extends into the chamber of the twin spouts is provided with aclosure member 14. This closure member is designed for the purpose of closing the bore of either spout, it being held normally closed at all times, while the device is applied to a barrel or hogshead, by any suitable means, such as sprmg 11. lVhen it is desired to throw the closure member into an open position the lever is operated. This closure member may be oscillated between the two spouts if desired. The twin spout is provided with means for holding the lever and its closure member in one position or another, in order to hold the passage-ways of the spouts closed or opened.
From the foregoing description, it will be observed that a new aud useful twin spout is provided, in order to fit bung holes of various sizes. The taper of the spout, also renders it possible to permit the spouts to fit bung holes which vary in diameters.
The closure member is provided with a packing ring orwasher 19, which is designed to cooperate with awasher 18 arranged in each of the passage-ways of the said spouts.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is:
1. A twin bung spout formed in a single casting, and comprising spouts of different diameters extending at right angles to one another.
2. A twin bung spout formed in a single casting, and comprising spouts of difierent diameters extending at right angles to one another, and a closure member movable from one spout to the other.
3. A twin bung spout consisting of a body portion having an outlet and including a chamber, said body portion embodying spouts of diiferent diameters extending at right angles to one another and merging into the said chamber.
4. A twin bung spout consisting of a body portion having an outlet and including achamber, said body portion embodying spouts of different diameters extending at right angles to one another and merging into the said chamber, and a closure member movable from one spout to the other.
5. A twin bung spout consisting of a body portion having an outlet opening and insaid opening and provided with a closure member for the spouts, said lever constituting means whereby the closure member.
may be oscillated from one passage-way to the other.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own, we have hereto affixed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES D. BOVYEZR. LE ROY N. BOORSE.
Vitnesses E. H. COBB, AL. P. BURCHELL.
