A wrapper 50, Fig. 2, folded to form an angular container over-lies a strip 56 adhered to the entire length of the edge of the container and extending out through a slit 54a, 54b in the container at one end 58 to form a tab for opening the container. In the form shown the wrapper is folded about a mandrel 52 into which cigarettes are introduced through a funnel (84), Fig. 7 (not shown) so that they push against the bottom of the package thereby ejecting the package and cigarettes from the mandrel. The top closure flaps, adhered together and to the strip 56, are opened by pulling the end 68, thus tearing the closure along half the length of the upper edges to form a flap (103), Fig. 15 (not shown), hinged about an upper end edge. The flap (103) is reclosable by adhesive either on the underside of the strip or on the upper surface of the intact half of the end closure. The wrapper may comprise a laminate of foil and paper. The slits 54a, 54b may be sealed by tabs on the inner surface of the wrapper, Figs. 18, 20 (not shown), or by a single strip that runs the length of the wrapper between the two slits, Fig. 21 (not shown). In a further embodiment, one or two sheets, e.g. of cardboard (118), Fig. 22 (not shown), placed between strip 56 and wrapper 50 extend around the top, bottom and side faces of the package to impart rigidity to the package. The sheet has slits (121) (123) displaced from the slits 54, and when forming the top closure of the package the end 68 of the strip passes through slits (121) (123) and lies between the sheet and wrapper 50 until it passes out between slits 54. Alternatively the sheet (118) may be of flexible material and strip 56 may lie between the sheet and wrapper. Again, Fig. 24 (not shown), a similar reinforcement sheet (128), adhered to the wrapper 50, has a series of projections at each end which interlock at the top closure when the wrapper is folded around the mandrel. After opening, the top closure member may be reclosed by folding the protruding end of the strip 56 and tucking it under the adjacent other end, Figs. 39-41 (not shown). The sheet 128 may be in two parts and the filled package may be withdrawn from the mandrel by grippers.
