사용자는 수신되는 방송을 그 시간에 시청하지 못할 경우, 녹화를 해서 봐야할 경우가 있다. 녹화할 방송프로그램의 채널 및 시간을 미리 설정하여 저장한 후, 예약녹화시간이 되면 자동으로 녹화가 가능케하여 다음에 녹화된 비디오테이프를 재생시켜서 볼 수 있다. 이처럼, 방송프로그램에 대한 예약녹화기능을 갖는 VCR 내지 TVCR등의 예약녹화시스템은 여러가지 예약녹화방식중 하나를 이용하여 그 기능을 수행한다. 예약녹화방식으로는 일반예약녹화방식과 간편 예약녹화방식중 많이 이용되는 G코드방식, 그리고 KBPS데이타를 이용한 방식등이 있다. 일반예약녹화방식은 사용자가 예약녹화를 원하는 프로그램의 채널, 날짜, 시작시간 및 종료시간을 키조작을 통해 일일이 설정하는 것으로, 많은 횟수의 키조작을 해야 하는 불편함이 있지만 매주, 매일 또는 한번녹화등 다양하게 녹화할 수 있는 잇점이 있다. G코드예약녹화는 최대 8자리(digit)까지 가능한 아라비아숫자로 표기되는 코드로 신문지상의 방송프로그램 옆에 그 특수한 코드를 기입해 두고, 사용자가 신문상에 안내되어 있는 G코드숫자를 입력시키면 이 숫자를 분석하여 해당채널 및 예약녹화시작시각과 종료시각을 알아낸다. 따라서, 사용자가 일일이 예약녹화에 필요한 정보를 설정시키지 않아도 숫자입력만으로 예약녹화가 가능하다. 하지만, G코드방식을 이용한 간편예약녹화방식은 매주, 매일녹화등을 할 수 없다. 한편, 사용자가 보다 편리하게 방송프로그램을 시청할 수 있도록 각 방송국마다 방송프로그램과 함께 방송할 프로그램제목 및 방영시간등에 관련한 KBPS데이타를 전송한다. 사용자는 각 방송국으로부터 전송되는 KBPS데이타를 수신받아 메모리에 저장하고, 메모리에 저장한 KBPS데이타를 이용하여 원하는 방송프로그램에 대한 예약기능을 수행한다. 즉, 각 방송국마다 방송프로그램과 함께 전송하는 방송프로그램들의 제목과 방영시간등의 KBPS데이타를 수신하여 사전 저장하고, 저장된 KBPS데이타를 화면상에 디스플레이하여 사용자로 하여금 원하는 방송프로그램을 선택할 수 있도록 하며, 사용자에 의해 선택된 방송프로그램의 KBPS데이타내에 방영시작시간에 맞추어 자동으로 채널전환이 이루어져 원하는 방송프로그램을 녹화할 수 있도록 한다. 이 KBPS예약녹화방식은 편리하기는 하나 키조작이 많고 원하는 프로그램이 나올때까지 검색을 해야하므로 예약녹화 설정하는 데 시간이 많이 걸리는 단점이 있다.If the user does not watch the received broadcast at that time, the user may need to record the video.
