Abstract

PURPOSE: An external pharmaceutical, containing the titled compound as a principal drug and a mixture of a glycol with polyethylene glycol in a specific proportion as a base, having improved solubility and releasing ability of the principal drug and reduced irritant action and spreadability of the base on the skin, and useful for an external anti-inflammatory agent.
CONSTITUTION: An external pharmaceutical prepared by incorporating (a) betamethasone valerate or betamethasone dipropionate in an effective amount with (b) about 10W40wt% 2W6C glycol and (c) about 10W40wt% polyethylene glycol having an average molecular weight of about 200W4,000, and if necessary (d) about 5W20wt% ≤3C monohydric alcohol, (e) about 0.2W2wt% carboxyvinyl polymer (gelling agent), (f) an adequate amount of a neutralizing agent for adjusting the pH of the pharmaceutical to preferably 5W6 and (g) a necessary amount of water. The pharmaceutical has an optimal balance between the solubility and the releasing ability to the affected part of the principal drug with slight irritant action on the skin and good spreadability on the skin.
