Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the optical absorption loss of a porous glass preform by adjusting hydrogen as starting material for a flame to a specified vol. and specifying the distance between the tip of a burner and a growing preform in the manufacture of the preform by a vapor phase axial sticking method. CONSTITUTION:Glass forming metal halide is fed to a burner together with oxyhydrogen to form glass fine powder in a flame, and this powder is successively deposited on the tip of a movable rodlike substrate to manufacture a porous glass preform for an optical fiber. At this time, the vol. of hydrogen fed is adjusted to 2.5-4l/min, and the distance between the tip of the burner and a growing preform is kept at 30-50mm. to reduce the amount of OH groups mixed into the fiber base material. As a result, the resulting preform has a reduced optical absorption loss.
