Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:1-(2-Tetrahydrothiophene-1,1-dioxide)-5-fulorouracil expressed by formula I.
USE: An antiviral and an antitumor agents having more improved antiutmor action than 5-fluorouracil.
PROCESS: 1-(2-Tetrahydrothienyl)-5-fluorouracil of formula II is oxidized with a peroxide, e.g. hydrogen peroxide, perbenzoic acid or m-chloroperbenzoic acid, to give a 5-fluorouracil derivative of formula I. The reaction is preferably carried out in a solvent, e.g. dichloromethane or chloroform, at 0W100°C, and the molar amount of the peroxide used is 2W5 times that of the compound of formula II.
